I think that you could show it to someone who was completely unfamiliar with the series and they’d enjoy it.
Maybe that’s because the director was completely unfamiliar with the series before he got the job?

Hot take: it’s a great movie, but not a great Star Trek movie. Too militaristic, gives you the impression that Starfleet is at odds with scientists instead of made up of scientists.
Obviously, though, to each their own.
