Congratulations! He represents two things I love very much … Star Trek and Ireland. He is also someone that represents a generation as we’ve seen him and grown familiar with him through so many appearances in TV and movies over the years.

His imdb page is suprisingly prolific m.imdb.com/name/nm0000538/ 151 roles since 1973 is a pretty damn good run.

I loved him in Layer Cake where he plays the opposite of Miles O’Brien.

The first thing I ever saw him in was “Intermission”, so you can imagine my shock upon discovering him on Trek a couple years ago.

khannie@lemmy.world on 10 Jan 2025 20:09 next collapse

That was such a good movie. I must give it a rewatch.

First time I saw him outside Star Trek was in a Scarlett O’Hara TV miniseries.

Imagine my surprise when he’s driving her around in a horse and buggy: an olde time transporter chief!

Wildly late but your comment did cause me to rewatch Intermission. What a great flick. The opening scene had stuck with me from before because it’s so well done but the brown sauce bit was amazing and overall it’s such a fun watch.

kaitco@lemmy.world on 18 Jan 2025 21:57 collapse

Haha! That’s awesome! It’s one of my favorite movies.

khannie@lemmy.world on 19 Jan 2025 00:09 collapse

If you don’t mind me asking, are you from a part of the world where brown sauce is a thing?

I’m laughing here.

kaitco@lemmy.world on 19 Jan 2025 02:18 collapse

Nope, and I definitely tried looking it up and getting some when I first saw it. 😂

khannie@lemmy.world on 19 Jan 2025 22:44 collapse

Haha. I’m not a huge brown sauce aficionado myself but HP is the gold standard in the UK and Chef is the big one in Ireland is my understanding. If there’s any British or Irish shops near you or even supermarket sections they’ll have it.

It’s like a more savoury ketchup I suppose. Bit more bite to it too. The thoughts of it in tea though. Jaysus. Just no.

toynbee@lemmy.world on 11 Jan 2025 16:13 collapse

I first saw him in Hell on Wheels.

icerunner_origin@startrek.website on 10 Jan 2025 15:32 next collapse

My favourite role of his (outside of Trek) is as the Elvis-loving dad in The Commitments.

Call him ‘Daddy’. Everyone calls him Daddy.

Really liked him in Hell on Wheels. Surprisingly believable as Thomas Durant.

This was my introduction to him!

Oh no! You can’t break the laws of physics; O’Brien MUST suffer! Take it away before the universe suffers a subspace quasar tachyon inversion burst collapse to the hull or something. 😉
