any announced date? (don’t really want to watch trailers)

stargazingpenguin@lemmy.zip on 02 Apr 15:46 next collapse

No, it just says summer.

ValueSubtracted@startrek.website on 02 Apr 15:48 collapse

There was a leak a few days ago suggesting July 31, which has since been retracted by the source (SkyShowtime in Europe).

Kirk@startrek.website on 02 Apr 16:15 next collapse

Well, this season looks officially ridiculous.

MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca on 02 Apr 17:55 collapse

You mean perfect, right!?

Kirk@startrek.website on 02 Apr 19:07 collapse

Oh my yes.

TrojanRoomCoffeePot@lemmy.world on 02 Apr 16:41 next collapse

Please more Andorian content, please more Andorian content, please more Andorian content, please more Andorian content…

Star Trek: The Search for Hemmer.

Not to be that guy (I am 100% that guy), but that’s an Orion.

TrojanRoomCoffeePot@lemmy.world on 03 Apr 13:17 collapse

There are blue Orions with antennae? <img alt="" src="https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/c5533ce2-9424-4f3f-8620-a60759ef8615.jpeg">

USSBurritoTruck@startrek.website on 04 Apr 01:39 next collapse

In this case, yes. The character Kirk was fighting in the gif you posted was surgically disguised as an Andorian to disrupt the diplomatic talks regarding the dilithium mining world, Coridan, in the episode “Journey to Babel”.

The Andorian in the screen grab in your second comment is an Andorian.

TrojanRoomCoffeePot@lemmy.world on 04 Apr 02:25 collapse

Good catch. I’m going to have to re-watch TOS.

transwarp@startrek.website on 04 Apr 01:45 collapse

When they’re disguised as an Andorian, yes.

There are also scenes with Cardassians that look like Bajorans, a Bajoran that looked like a Cardassian, a human that looks like a Malcorian, and a human/Betazoid hybrid that looked like a Mintakan,

askryan@startrek.website on 02 Apr 17:56 next collapse

I adore how campy this looks, but I’m so frustrated by the constant shoehorning of Kirk into the show. Maybe if the performance were interesting or there was something compelling about him it would be different, but he just seems to drag down the show whenever he appears (outside of the episode with La’an, but really, she was doing all of the work in that one).

data1701d@startrek.website on 02 Apr 20:53 collapse

I agree he’s not the best Captain Kirk, but I did enjoy his performance in the time travel episode (might have just been the writing and La’an performance like you said, though).

Now what we need is more George Samuel leaving crumbs and annoying Spock energy. I mean, the dude’s only got 8 years or so live… Give our boy some screen time!

askryan@startrek.website on 03 Apr 05:17 collapse

It’s still so weird that they got the one completely charisma-free actor on the show to play Jim Kirk, and yet Sam Kirk lights up every scene he’s in

ValueSubtracted@startrek.website on 03 Apr 06:04 collapse

I have no beef with Paul Wesley - young Kirk was described as “a stack of books with legs” back in TOS, and I think that comes through in the performance.

But Sam Kirk is an absolute delight.

kieron115@startrek.website on 04 Apr 14:24 collapse

This is a very good point. We’re supposed to be seeing how he becomes the Kirk we know.

barneypiccolo@lemm.ee on 02 Apr 19:09 next collapse

I cant wait. I’ve loved all the Star Trek series except Discovery. I just couldn’t get into it, and I tried hard. Maybe I’ll give it another go before this comes out.

ValueSubtracted@startrek.website on 02 Apr 19:19 next collapse

If the first season wasn’t your cup of tea, you might try skipping to season two - I personally think it’s the weakest of the five, but it does introduce Mount, Peck, and Romijn as Pike, Spock, and Una.

And then there’s the major shift at the end, which sets the stage for some seasons that I really enjoyed.

barneypiccolo@lemm.ee on 02 Apr 20:10 next collapse

I got to season 3 before bailing, but season one was really ponderous. I’m really over the Star Trek obsession with Klingons.

askryan@startrek.website on 02 Apr 20:29 collapse

I think season 4 was the only one I didn’t have to push myself to like - there were lots of great bits scattered throughout the first three seasons, but the fourth is where I felt like the whole season was enjoyable and strong (particularly the last couple of episodes).

barneypiccolo@lemm.ee on 02 Apr 20:37 collapse

I’ll give it another try, but I’ll skip that ridiculouus first season

pinball_wizard@lemmy.zip on 03 Apr 03:47 collapse

That’s wise. No one is completely sure what happened in Disco Season one, anyway, due to the lack of lighting budget…

JoYo@lemmy.ml on 03 Apr 01:04 collapse

season 1 made me rage quit until snw encouraged another try. now saru is my favorite character.

FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world on 02 Apr 23:50 collapse

The only part of Discovery I enjoyed was the time with Pike’s crew, SNW is a far better show and I’m excited to see more.

julian@community.nodebb.org on 02 Apr 23:51 collapse

@fordbeeblebrox@lemmy.world that's because Discovery is just bad fan fiction.

It makes Enterprise worth watching.

FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world on 03 Apr 01:07 next collapse

I’m one of those who unironically like Enterprise and its song, sometimes I’ll sing the first few bars just to make the gf roll her eyes. Even at its cheesiest its still better than the Burnham show featuring Starfleet as backup characters

barneypiccolo@lemm.ee on 03 Apr 02:15 next collapse

Perfect. After Discovery, Enterprise is the next weak link. Everything else is pretty great.

MalikMuaddibSoong@startrek.website on 03 Apr 16:55 collapse

Enterprise getting a second lease on life by virtue of no longer being the worst? I’m here for it 💪

julian@community.nodebb.org on 03 Apr 16:56 collapse

Bitswap@lemmy.world on 04 Apr 15:42 collapse

I was waiting for this to be busted out reading down that comment chain. Surprised it took so long.

pinball_wizard@lemmy.zip on 03 Apr 03:46 collapse

How dare you!

I understand not liking Discovery, but I draw the line at encouraging a rewatch of Enterprise!

(I’m kidding. Enterprise wasn’t all that bad… Mostly.)

data1701d@startrek.website on 02 Apr 20:49 next collapse

Part of me is like, “Seriously! Mire multiverse stuff! Can we take a break, please?”, while the other half of me is like, “If it’s as good as LD or PRO multiverse stuff, I’ll take it!”

I am a bit worried about the fourth wall breaking stuff, but I wonder if they’re doing a Benny Russell “dreamer and the dream”-type thing, which might be fun.

The Clue episode looks fun. The trailer makes it look like this season is 75% quasi-holodeck episodes, which would be quite funny but is probably not the cases.

Kudusch@startrek.website on 04 Apr 13:22 collapse

Was that Patton Oswalt as a Vulcan? Maybe he’s Sybok! And Rhys Darby looks like he could be playing Trelane.
