The jingle is a nice add-on, though a white-coloured print may have been clearer.

It’s interesting that they didn’t bother replicating (heh) the rubber base of the originals. Too many added costs, I suppose.

veeesix@lemmy.ca on 12 Mar 15:46 collapse

You’re probably right that the math didn’t add up for them.

Might be worth getting a pad replacement for the original cup and slapping that on yourself.

ValueSubtracted@startrek.website on 12 Mar 15:49 collapse

I wonder if those would fit - the article says that these “replimat-style” mugs are smaller than the Highwave “Quark’s” mugs, but I suppose they could have the same base.

Finally! Been looking for these for a long time that weren’t stupidly overpriced!

Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works on 13 Mar 06:11 collapse

They’re 30 bucks…

stargazingpenguin@lemmy.zip on 13 Mar 10:35 collapse

It’s still a lot of money for a mug, but compared to the $150-$300 they’re selling for on eBay it’s a great deal!

The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world on 12 Mar 15:42 next collapse

I need this.

stargazingpenguin@lemmy.zip on 12 Mar 16:11 next collapse

Very tempting! All the other ones I’ve seen are quite expensive.

SatyrSack@feddit.org on 12 Mar 16:15 next collapse

Is this shape not rather impractical? It may be more difficult to accidentally knock over, but you would also need to tip it back to a somewhat extreme angle in order to get everything out of it.

ackbar@lemmy.ca on 12 Mar 16:16 next collapse

No way am I able to clean that without a bottle brush. I’ll sick to a standard mug.

T156@lemmy.world on 14 Mar 03:12 collapse

This seems like the kind of thing you’d need either a dishwasher, or one of those cafe rinsers that spray water up into the thing to clean.

You’d never be able to get your hand into the corners.

ackbar@lemmy.ca on 14 Mar 12:53 collapse

That is my biggest concern with drinkware like this. What if I forgot to clean it right away. If it got crusty, I would never get it clean.

ValueSubtracted@startrek.website on 12 Mar 16:18 next collapse

I think the design was originally intended for use on boats, and other places where tipping is a likely occurrence.

darkpanda@lemmy.ca on 13 Mar 00:56 collapse

I think it’s for any motor vehicle where tipping is likely. See this page with all sorts of pictures and examples, including old packaging.

It’s very practical if you’re somewhere without inertial dampeners.

bishbosh@lemm.ee on 12 Mar 21:08 collapse

Does earth have inertial dampeners??

Corgana@startrek.website on 12 Mar 21:53 next collapse
T156@lemmy.world on 14 Mar 03:11 collapse

Does the gravity field/planet mass count? It’d take a huge movement for us to notice any shift in Earth’s inertia.

stargazingpenguin@lemmy.zip on 12 Mar 16:34 collapse

Is the wider section actually hollow? I was imagining they might just have a normal round shape inside due to it being more difficult to mold.

TargaryenTKE@lemmy.world on 12 Mar 16:06 next collapse

Don’t get me wrong, they get points for the Coolness Factor, but am I the only one who thinks this is genuinely a terrible design for a mug? Like, I have a hard enough time getting the coffee rings out of my cylindrical mugs, I don’t even want to imagine the finger cramps I’d get trying to clean this one (or worse, the mold that would certainly grow if I didn’t deep clean it every time)

distantsounds@lemmy.world on 12 Mar 16:21 next collapse

I would not be able to properly control the flow rate of hot beverage directed at face with that design. Still love that look

mercano@lemmy.world on 12 Mar 20:10 next collapse

DS9 had at least two different kinds of flared mugs: the HotJo, which is still sold for $30, and the Feltman Langer, which is no longer sold, but this CherryTree is recreating.

_core@sh.itjust.works on 13 Mar 02:04 collapse

Neat, a mug that looks like a bullhorn
