I want to love these but the baseball umpire making what sounds like football calls just irks me.

You’re forgetting Ad Homicide: Just because you killed someone doesn’t mean you’re right.

(And of course, its vice versa, just because you (or someone with your views) got killed doesn’t mean you’re right, which admittedly is less common in history, but nonetheless something to be aware of to evaluate arguments critically.)

The Fallacy Fallacy.

You assume that because the argument contains a logical fallacy, that the conclusion must be false. We already know that it is entitely possible to do everything right and still fail; now you must understand the opposite is also sometimes true and you can do everything wrong but still succeed.

Dasus@lemmy.world on 04 Oct 02:07 collapse

Also, an ad hominem is an attack against the person instead of the argument.

If you attack the argument and then the person, that’s not technically an ad hominem.

captainlezbian@lemmy.world on 04 Oct 03:15 next collapse

Exactly. “No because you’re an idiot” is ad hominem, but “no because x, and you’re an idiot for thinking that” is valid albeit rude

caseyweederman@lemmy.ca on 04 Oct 11:06 collapse

No, that would be an and hominem.

About 10 years ago, some guy was posting photos of NFL refs calling penalties on logical fallacies.
