UK users need photo ID to view any adult content on the internet. Those subs often include gore. I don't understand what point the author is trying to make.

Didn’t read the article, but the title is probably just your run-of-the-mill engagement bait and only tangentially related to the content. It’s 2025 after all.

a lot of the discussion about “require age verification to view adult content” tends to oversimplify “adult content == pornography”

which in turn means opposition to these laws gets dismissed / trivialized as “oh, so you want children to look at porn then?”

I think it’s an important reminder that “adult content” is much broader than 13 year olds who want to go to PornHub and search “boobies”

This is so they can identify everyone who uses the internet.

Remember how everyone was horrified when an authoritarian government like China forced everyone to disclose their identities to get online?

Now the authoritarians are here.

LemmyThinkAboutThat@lemmy.myserv.one on 29 Jul 2025 19:37 next collapse

Yes.

“We’re not at all surprised the UK government is deploying this tactic now when the world is paying attention to the horrors unfolding, they’d rather silence the discussion than confront their own complicity,” the moderators of r/IsraelCrimnes told me. “By labeling brutally documented atrocities as ‘mature content’ and gate‑keeping access, they reveal themselves as hypocrites: preaching democracy and human rights abroad while trampling them at home.”

It gets better /s:

Reddit explained that it will verify users’ age by partnering with Persona, an identity verification company that raised $200 million in April in a series D round led by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund. Persona asks users to upload a selfie or photo ID in order to verify their age. Reddit says it does not have access to these images, and that Persona does not retain those photos for more than seven days.

Take a deep breath…

EDIT added /s for sarcasm

Oh good. All I have to do is hand Peter Fucking Thiel my identity and internet history.

That is NO relief at all!

Vodulas@beehaw.org on 30 Jul 2025 00:28 collapse

Next up, Persona sends a copy of all the data it collects to Palantir

They have already started talking about banning VPNs. It was never about protecting children.

Remember how everyone was horrified when an authoritarian government like China forced everyone to disclose their identities to get online? You’re thinking of Korea, its government required every citizen to have a ten digit online ID until 2008.

Oh that’s adorable, it’s like a Roman in 80 CE complainign to their senator about government policy.

SoupBrick@pawb.social on 29 Jul 2025 17:04 collapse

Cool, are you doing anything in the real world to try to make a positive change or just shitting on people who are?

cygnus@lemmy.ca on 29 Jul 2025 17:36 next collapse

I mercifully don’t like in the US, but I am quite politally active, thanks.

If you could stop discouraging people from trying to make a difference here, those of us who do live here would appreciate it.

I always find this specific brand of projection fascinating.

Our reps don’t care about us. They just want to lick Trump’s ass.

JSGale@beehaw.org on 29 Jul 2025 23:24 next collapse

Oh this is bad. We need to move more people onto places like this. I can’t say I know how though. If you have any ideas please reply to me! I would love to hear them.

Maybe just use your MP’s selfie or ID? use-their-id.com
