Now is the best time for everyone to make the switch to osm based map apps like OsmAnd; especially with the disinformation and mislabeling that Google and Apple are spreading.

melp@beehaw.org on 20 Feb 05:29 next collapse

Thanks for the suggestion! I have Maps.ME on my droid. Adding this to my list to use.

I’ve been using OsmAnd~ from FDroid, and it’s the first time in a long time that I’ve felt something close to feature overload. Between the modes, all the settings per mode, different map layers and sources, all the plugins, and ability to edit maps… that thing feels more like a GIS app than a maps app 😄

OpenStreetMap itself also has a map with wiki-style feature edition history and comments.

sigh if I have to go all in on organic maps I will even though it’s not 100% there. Ads will make me do it

HeyLow@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 20 Feb 02:25 next collapse

Organic maps is awesome! I wish it was faster, it’s currently too slow for car navigation(for me)! I’ve been using OsmAnd, the UI isn’t the greatest but it’s fast enough for car navigation and is prob the most useable osm based map apps available

jagermo@feddit.org on 20 Feb 06:31 next collapse

I love organic, but if you want an other option, here we ho (ex Nokia maps) is pretty fast and has a features like traffic

I love Osmand, but for car navigation Magic Earth is far better imho. Also its routing algorithm is the best I’ve ever used. Not open source though.

HeyLow@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 21 Feb 01:56 collapse

Magic Earth looks cool, I’ll have to give it a try! I’ll prob stick with OsmAnd since it’s open source and I can help improve it and Osm over time

We all need to contribute to open maps in order for then to be actually usable. Some parts don’t have any street numbers, and some don’t even have street names, much less business info on them.

EDIT: We also should contribute to the open maps lemmy community and help out.

LandedGentry@lemmy.zip on 20 Feb 13:44 collapse

Someone one mentioned some gamified app thing to me where you can input stuff into OM. Something Streets?

Evkob@lemmy.ca on 20 Feb 14:11 collapse

The app you’re thinking of is StreetComplete!

Which reminds me, I should really download it and start contributing to OSM.

LandedGentry@lemmy.zip on 20 Feb 14:26 next collapse

That’s it - thanks!

FrankLaskey@lemmy.ml on 20 Feb 18:04 collapse

Is it possible to use StreetComplete on iOS?

PopeRigby@beehaw.org on 20 Feb 18:49 next collapse

Unfortunately, no.

I mean Tim, if you wanted me to stop using maps you could have just asked, you didn’t need to insert ads.

LoamImprovement@beehaw.org on 21 Feb 17:09 collapse

Yeah no shit not everyone’s onboard. How the fuck does this help anyone except the apple C-suites?
