Hell yeah, this is cool. Anyone have experience using O Maps or CoMaps for day-to-day navigation? I’ve never thought of going FOSS for this sort of thing, I would love to give Google one less piece of my data.

It doesn’t have traffic data, which is probably the biggest disadvantage. The maps are user contributed, so the quality varies widely. Depending on where you are, it’ll be ridiculously detailed with individual bushes in a park, or it’s incorrect or outdated and you can’t find your destination. I usually use this or OSMand, but I still keep google maps on another profile as a backup.

There’s magic earth that does traffic and similar to waze but since no one uses it around me its more great

Vodulas@beehaw.org on 04 Jul 18:51 collapse

I use magic earth, and it is inaccurate with traffic most of the time. Still, it is accurate sometimes, and most of the time I just need the turn by turn because I already know where there will be traffic on most days.

What sets CoMaps apart is a fully transparent governance approach. All decisions about the app’s development are made publicly, with users and contributors having a voice in its future direction. This focus on community engagement aims to deliver value for its users rather than prioritize profit.

Did I miss something? How is Organic Maps possibly “prioritizing profit?”

tate@lemmy.sdf.org on 03 Jul 18:18 collapse

Yep, sure enough I missed this:

I have no idea to what extent the allegations are justified, but if they are true, then yeah, a fork was necessary.

thx for adding the context

The lack of any reasonable response to these allegations is the actual problem

Very nice app. Going to give it a good spin.

After installing it, a tiny but relevant point is to get a nicer icon that “app name in a square”, Organic Maps had a nice, RECOGNIZABLE icon, CoMaps will be glossed over when looking for it a bunch of times because of it’s super generic one. I imagine it’s coming since they’re just starting but hope that someone does have it in mind.

I’m thinking a big C with an inscribed O, and maybe the O can have a map/globe/compasa inside of it.

Dreaming_Novaling@lemmy.zip on 04 Jul 23:21 collapse

Actually they’re doing votes for logos, they ended round 1 about a month ago according to their Mastodon account. I think the globe one and the CM w/ a compass logos look best so far.
