Yes, unfortunately this happens a lot in other media and especially since the main part of an artificial intelligence is not an algorithm.

See, now this is a real use for these programs. Finding patterns in DNA and RNA to help isolate genes within a genome seems like exactly the kind if thing this tech excels at in a way that doesnt fuck over most people involved.

CRISPR was discovered in 1987. This year we saw the first approved therapy based on it. Now we have found almost 200 possible variations on the idea. Things are going to get interesting.
