  • Amazon has struggled to make inroads in Argentina because of high tariffs and labyrinthine import regulations.
  • MercadoLibre, Latin America’s biggest e-commerce platform, dominates the digital commerce market.
  • A network of smugglers who ferry goods into the country is booming.

Good job Argentina.

“a network of smugglers” sounds very entrepreneurial.

Pacattack57@lemmy.world on 24 Jan 2025 01:10 collapse

Just a small business. Nothing to see here 😂

Or else, comprende?

The problem is those who are doing the money , smugglers, customs brokers are importing shit from china, the and the “good quality” merchandise is overpriced almost 200% . So the ones affected are the common citizen .

Always a big fan of more western influence over south and central american countries.

Not even joking, they have a murder culture that needs to change. It doesn’t surprise me at all that gangsters have such a presence there.

philpo@feddit.org on 24 Jan 2025 13:25 next collapse

Yeah, more northern hemisphere influence is just what they need. It’s not like that already let to Operation Condor and Milei.

sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works on 24 Jan 2025 16:04 next collapse

Milei seems to at least be fixing inflation. It’s already down to 117% from nearly 300% in April. He has been in office just over a year and reversed a very troubling inflationary trend.

Time will tell if he’s a positive influence for Argentina long-term. The changes have certainly been painful in the short-term, but if lower inflation leads to higher investment and growth, it could fix some of the worst of the economic problems.

philpo@feddit.org on 24 Jan 2025 19:25 collapse

He crushed the inflation by doubling poverty and killing domestic consumption. Not something anyone should be proud of.

sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works on 24 Jan 2025 20:20 collapse

Yes, that’s the pain in the short-term. It’s still unclear how long it’ll take for the economy to recover, hence the uncertainty over the long-term.

don’t forget Pinochet!

Sgt_choke_n_stroke@lemmy.world on 24 Jan 2025 20:13 collapse

I wonder why?/s

It’s not like operation condor brought them prosperity.

America made this problem.

SplashJackson@lemmy.ca on 24 Jan 2025 11:28 next collapse

Amazon can go fuck itself!

The rain forest is okay though

geography082@lemm.ee on 24 Jan 2025 12:19 next collapse

Because it is one of most corrupted countries in the world. A lot of people has already billionaire business not just from smuggler, Wich are a very small amount, the problem are corrupted custom brokers in the customs imports . Almost nothing is being regulated.

cupcakezealot@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 24 Jan 2025 12:20 collapse

Because they have something like 200% inflation.

sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works on 24 Jan 2025 16:01 collapse

Currently 117%. It’s still terrible, but definitely on a steep downward trend, since it was almost 300% in April.
