Cory Doctorow is a genius.

Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca on 28 May 18:39 collapse

He is at least thoughtful, a good communicator and helpful.

Cory is amazing. I interviewed him on Fireside Fedi and that dude has so many well thought out points. He changed my mind on Threads coming into the Fediverse.

Excellent read, this isn’t a post you should just up vote blindly, read it first.

Cory absolutely cooks every single time without fail. I’m also a huge fan of how he really doesn’t budge on the point that corps are at fault for the enshitternet - I’ve followed him for years and that has always been his central point, or at least one of them. 10/10 writer and speaker too

Interesting and insightful article …

Badabinski@kbin.earth on 28 May 16:18 next collapse

In particular, the companies purchase financial information from a data broker before offering a nurse a shift; if the nurse is carrying a lot of credit-card debt, especially if some of that is delinquent, the amount offered is reduced. "Because, the more desperate you are, the less you'll accept to come into work and do that grunt work of caring for the sick, the elderly, and the dying." That is horrific on many levels, he said, but "it is emblematic of 'enshittification'", which is one of the reasons he highlighted it.

What the ACTUAL FUCK‽ This is the type of shit Neal Stephenson would put in a fucking cyberpunk dystopia novel. I am filled with so much fucking rage. My sister is a nurse and goes through so much fucking bullshit at her job already. Nurses really do not need more shit thrown at them.

cory doctorow’s novels too are full of “this type of shit” ☞ craphound.com

This is going to be my goto example of why people need to care about data privacy. This is fucking insane. I’d fire someone for even throwing that out as a suggestion.

Updoot for “gaping anus”. That’s going to work its way into my everyday parlance.

I listen attentively to pretty much anything Cory Doctorow says about the internet and technology, he’s been consistently insightful as hell on the subject. His books are also pretty good.

Scrollone@feddit.it on 28 May 21:13 next collapse

What book of his would you recommend reading first?

AstralPath@lemmy.ca on 28 May 22:23 next collapse

Radicalized is a really good collection of shorter works. en.m.wikipedia.org/…/Radicalized_(Doctorow_book)

I quite liked Walkaway, but I’ve got kind of an anarchist bent myself, so.

fafferlicious@lemmy.world on 29 May 01:37 next collapse

another vote for walkaway - i got hooked on the idea of “git, but for houses”

Manalith@midwest.social on 29 May 02:21 collapse

I liked Little Brother. Didn’t get into Homeland as much though.

Not only that, but many of his books are freely available epubs with no DRM. You can read them and decide if you like his style before going on to buy the others.
