Because how could you sell contact data to google and apple if they already have it?

xodoh74984@lemmy.world on 22 Oct 20:29 collapse

Or reinforce your walled garden and strengthen user lock-in?

While these are both certainly true it has also been annoying when I’ve added a regular contact but it doesn’t show up in WhatsApp straight away

Oh good. It’s really annoying have my contacts in one place; better to have a subset of them on a proprietary app

If this means I can deny WhatsApp access to my regular contacts and still have a decent user experience I’m all for it.

echodot@feddit.uk on 23 Oct 07:18 collapse

Wait is this a feature that people want? Won’t that get confusing because you’ll have two different contact lists except the WhatsApp one will be a subset of the phone one.

Also at this point I’ve got all my contacts sorted out so I’m not going to use the feature. This would have needed to have been added at the beginning.

RmDebArc_5@sh.itjust.works on 23 Oct 07:37 collapse

It allows you to use WhatsApp without giving them full access to your contacts, so privacy wise I do want this feature

echodot@feddit.uk on 23 Oct 10:52 next collapse

Right but they already have access now so closing the door after the horses bolted situation.

Badeendje@lemmy.world on 23 Oct 11:04 collapse

Well, time moves forward… so new users, replacement users, new contacts.

EpicMuch@sh.itjust.works on 24 Oct 16:58 collapse

Yeah. This entirely. I will not share out my contact list for it to be stolen abused or sold
