I posted about that here and forgot < lemmy.world/post/896361> but today when I checked cloudflare analytics it showed about 1000 pageviews in last 24 hours. Looks like some people are using it so just wanted to let you guys know that it works, no ads. no popups nothing.

Doesn’t this just direct traffic to Reddit? Why do you want to do that?

dukk@programming.dev on 08 Sep 2023 18:57 next collapse

No Reddit account, you aren’t using their shitty app; IDK, seems like a win to me.

Reddit “traffic” doesn’t really mean or do anything for them(mainly at this scale).

variants@possumpat.io on 08 Sep 2023 19:21 collapse

but it could be effort towards lemmy, instead of going to reddit to see some content you can actively create content or comment on lemmy so that hopefully the content you liked on reddit will start to grow on lemmy, it takes effort but its the only way for it to work

LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net on 09 Sep 2023 03:13 collapse

I’ve been doing this but even getting one community going takes work. I can’t launch them all, and I’m still contributing about half of the content to my community.

Lemmy is just too small for some topics to take off until we get another big wave of growth. In the mean time I think visiting a few niche subs is not going to kill anyone, and we can keep working to grow Lemmy at the same time. These approaches aren’t mutually exclusive.

overdevs@lemmy.world on 08 Sep 2023 19:04 collapse

Indirectly? yes. But there are some subs like r/progresspics r/gainit etc that haven’t moved to other platforms and have good content on them related to the niche the serve. Also the occasional google search that takes you to reddit.

Hey… and if anyone is interested in a chrome extension to automatically redirect reddit links to this please tell me, I have made one and I am using it for myself for now, if people want it I will upload it to the extension store.

TheRazorX@kbin.social on 08 Sep 2023 19:17 next collapse

Definitely upload it.

realitista@lemm.ee on 10 Sep 2023 14:07 collapse

While you wait, I’ve found a solution which works perfectly for me. I use the firefox extension Redirector with these settings. Now I don’t have to ignore every video on lemmit that’s hosted on Reddit because I don’t want to give them pageviews, I can just watch them on RDX instead! get all the Reddit content I want without ever actually visiting Reddit.

Can you please right click > inspect element > console and paste the output here.

NoRodent@lemmy.world on 10 Sep 2023 09:53 collapse

Did that and saw that Firefox’s tracking protection was what was blocking it. Once I turned it off, the content loaded.

overdevs@lemmy.world on 08 Sep 2023 20:06 next collapse

It just sends one xhr request to reddit. Unless you have blocked reddit or disabled javascript it should work. Can you please right click > inspect element > console and paste the output here.

beeb@lemm.ee on 09 Sep 2023 04:12 next collapse

I haven’t blocked reddit and can access it just fine. I’m not sure how to inspect the source on Firefox mobile though.

overdevs@lemmy.world on 09 Sep 2023 07:55 collapse

Please if you can share the details of your device and browser, i will look into it and fix it.

beeb@lemm.ee on 10 Sep 2023 12:36 collapse

It’s a oneplus 9 pro on Android 13 (oxygenOS 13.1) with Firefox mobile (which ever is the currently latest published version). No need to fix it just for me though, as I’m not browsing reddit anymore, but it might help others.

SteveTech@programming.dev on 09 Sep 2023 10:47 collapse

Using Firefox with private browsing, I get this:

Cross-Origin Request Blocked: The Same Origin Policy disallows reading the remote resource at https://www.reddit.com/r/all/.json?limit=20. (Reason: CORS request did not succeed). Status code: (null).
The resource at “https://www.reddit.com/r/all/.json?limit=20” was blocked because content blocking is enabled. rdx.overdevs.com

Works fine in normal mode though.

byrona@lemmy.world on 10 Sep 2023 01:43 collapse

Yeah same here on ff mobile. Works fine on chrome. I don’t think there is a console on the mobile version?

No reddit popups, ads, banners, faster, easier, only focuses on the content.

An application for every website. Each "focusing on the content". All that does is move the browsing to the OS.

thanks, I’m one of those who use your viewer! it makes viewing content much more bearable on mobile. I only wish there were a way to redirect all reddit links to your site on mobile.

Chemical_Buns@lemmy.world on 09 Sep 2023 04:35 next collapse

I’ve been using this since third party apps went down, thank you! Unfortunately videos haven’t had audio in a while but I still much prefer it over the official site.

Also a way to export/import subscriptions would be helpful for use on other devices or browsers.

overdevs@lemmy.world on 09 Sep 2023 07:52 collapse

Videos will have audio tomorrow. If reddit provides a way to export subscriptions I will implement the import function.

Chemical_Buns@lemmy.world on 09 Sep 2023 12:05 collapse

Awesome! I didn’t mean exporting subscriptions from a reddit account but from rdx itself. I was thinking that the list of subscriptions that appears when you press the + button could be exportable if possible.

overdevs@lemmy.world on 10 Sep 2023 08:26 collapse

Videos have audio now, will add the export function later. Depends on what app the exported data you need to be compatible with.

Chemical_Buns@lemmy.world on 11 Sep 2023 11:16 collapse

Just rdx, that way when I want to use rdx on a different browser or device I don’t have to manually resubscribe to all of my subreddits again.

Plopp@lemmy.world on 09 Sep 2023 10:14 next collapse

There just are no alternatives to some things on there. So I’m stuck having to check in at least once every day.

Klear@sh.itjust.works on 09 Sep 2023 11:20 collapse

“Having to”? Sounds like addiction tbh.

hellerpop@lemmy.world on 09 Sep 2023 15:58 collapse

Some people use it for more than just entertainment and killing time. Like getting advice on certain topics like parenting or relationships. How to deal with a partner with certain conditions etc. You can’t find that on lemmy.

Klear@sh.itjust.works on 09 Sep 2023 19:10 next collapse

If you have to check parenting advice on reddit every day, you shouldn’t have had children in the first place.

hellerpop@lemmy.world on 09 Sep 2023 19:33 collapse

Yeah, well maybe today it’s parenting, tomorrow it’s about struggles during meditation, next day it’s about a certain video game, then astronomy etc. And then the cycle repeats. There are thousands of topics where you can find huge communities on reddit and virtually none on lemmy. I haven’t been on reddit since July but I still miss it. I’m patient and hope that in a few years lemmy has grown enough to sustain niche topics.

Fades@lemmy.world on 09 Sep 2023 20:50 collapse

Because Reddit is the only place those communities exist, right?

hellerpop@lemmy.world on 09 Sep 2023 21:31 collapse

Umm, yes. It’s such a low entry level. Once you signed up for the memes and the cute cats like millions of others you might as well look for some niche topics and find that there are thousands of others like you. That’s only possible if you have many many millions of people in the pool.

If you’re really serious about your interest of course you’ll branch off to other platforms. But even then your reddit community probably pointed you there.

Bodongs@lemmy.world on 09 Sep 2023 10:24 next collapse

I would if lemmy was even close to an actual replacement.

kilgore_trout@feddit.it on 09 Sep 2023 10:30 collapse

Stumblinbear@pawb.social on 09 Sep 2023 10:44 next collapse

Have you even used Lemmy for anything except meme reposts?

rambaroo@lemmy.world on 09 Sep 2023 16:14 next collapse

Yes, but you’re still right. The niche content isn’t there and won’t be until the user base reaches critical mass, which might never happen.

Agent641@lemmy.world on 10 Sep 2023 13:39 collapse

Basically every community that doesn’t have > 1,000,000 subscribers on Reddit?

DarienGS@lemmy.world on 09 Sep 2023 13:27 next collapse

Because I want Lemmy to succeed and grow, I’m making a real effort to contribute to discussions where previously I’d have just thought things to myself and moved on. I really hope more people do the same so we can start to sustain those more niche forums.

scarilog@lemmy.world on 11 Sep 2023 03:51 collapse

I would like to add that I am also doing the same

HarbingerOfTomb@lemmy.world on 09 Sep 2023 17:46 next collapse

That’s too many subscribers anyway. 90% of the comments would’ve just been buried and no one would’ve seen them

Syntha@sh.itjust.works on 09 Sep 2023 20:25 collapse

Yes, 100 to 200 comments per thread are easily enough, but lots of medium sized subreddits don’t even exist or are barely active on Lemmy.

realitista@lemm.ee on 09 Sep 2023 19:37 collapse

I use lemmit. That way the reddit content comes here to Lemmy, and I have everything I want here in one place. I just started using a browser plugin to redirect any links that direct to reddit from lemmit to direct to RDX instead. This was only an issue with some videos and stuff that were hosted on reddit, normal links would skip reddit completely by default with lemmit. Now with RDX, I can really avoid reddit altogether!

SamboT@lemm.ee on 09 Sep 2023 19:56 collapse

I was curious about this kind of idea. Isn’t all reddit content owned by reddit, and isnt pasting their intellectual property onto a different platform not really super legal? (I fully support it)

Being able to extract all of the question/answer threads on reddit to boost the value of lemmy from a search index perspective seemed too good to be true as a solution.

realitista@lemm.ee on 09 Sep 2023 20:11 next collapse

Maybe too good to be true, but I’ll ride that train to the end of the line! As for comments, it’s not possible, and anyway, I think it’s better to start our own conversations here.

SamboT@lemm.ee on 10 Sep 2023 01:40 collapse

I was wondering if it was possible to write a script to scrape reddit posts, and then ask chatgpt to say the same thing slightly differently and output the post/comments in a csv format and then use that to create a lemmy posting bot. Idk if chatgpt has api access like that though, and what agreements would prohibit this.

flumph@programming.dev on 10 Sep 2023 01:03 collapse

Unless Reddit’s TOS is vastly different from other social media sites, you keep ownership of your content and give them a perpetual license to host it on their site. That way, if you post something illegal, it’s still your problem and not theirs.

That being said, copying non-link content is technically copyright infringement from the original poster. It’ll probably never amount to anything.
