Might have to start importing all my tech from the EU at this rate.
Be sure not to import any malware.
You mean, beside crapple itself? đ
You mean, besides crapdroid itself? đ€Ș
You mean best apple design hardware backdoor. Lol
Iâm sure android has something simular to be honest
No need to fight, theyâre both trash.
As someone who switched from android to ios two years ago, Iâm still frustrated with just how much of a shit the user experience is. Going back to lineageos as soon as Iâm able and throwing this iphone crap in the trash.
What donât you like
for one, it drives me nuts that I canât have separate volumes for the ringer and notifications.
Iâll give you that. I would enjoy that feature, but itâs not something that would make me choose Android.
Keyboard lack symbol button on first page. Instead I have to switch to next page. For a ? mark.
App launcher. Can I select what apps go where? No if they decided that this app goes in that category tough luck.
Apple translate, the texts needs to fit on the sign! You canât zoom or anything unless you take a picture.
No Bluetooth transfer.
Lack of foss apps.
So many places you need to turn off if you donât want your phone give you suggestions or track you.
Keyboard, I can see how that would be annoying if you wanted it. You can install other keyboards.
The launcher is stupid, I agree.
Transfer is done via AirDrop
Tracking: Each manufacturers flavor of Android will have the same thing. (Unless you donât use the OS that came with the device)
Airdrop donât work with non IOS.
Are you sure about tracking? Because I can only compare to my pixel and my Motorola but I only need to go to three places to turn off things while Iphone I have to go to 5.
I could install other keyboard but it is already built in. I just want a toggle to enable it. But just for curiosity sake do you feel it goes, quite quickly to type a sentence with,?
Airdrop: right⊠there is a bit of ecosystemcentrism, to coin a phrase.
Tracking: 3 vs 5, I mean, once itâs set itâs set. Not really an issue for me.
Iâve gotten quite fast with the keyboard, and I donât have a problem with the modifier combinations. When I go to Android, or any other mobile keyboard, it feels strange. But, this is entirely muscle memory for me, so I can understand if you think it doesnât âfeel rightâ when you use it.
âProtecc me daddy Apple, I donât know what Iâm doing! Lock me up real good!â
Iâm sure Apple will heavily region-lock this.
Iâm really interested to see how theyâre going to region lock this. Will it be where the device was sold? Does that comply with EU regulations? Will it be geographical location? If I move to the US, will it lock the side loaded apps? If I grab a VPN can I side load things?
I wouldnât be surprised if itâs the country where the SIM originates. A prepaid eSIM from an EU carrier (as secondary sim) is pretty cheap though and might work if this is what they do.
Interesting thought! This wouldnât work for iPads and iPhones with no sim (but use WiFi) though
Any recent iPhone/iPad will support eSIM. It would work just fine for them.
Only the cellular iPads have the eSIM. The standard WiFi ones do not. Since iOS covers both of these devices, older models, and folks who choose not to have a carrier despite having the ability to do so, I donât believe this would be a partial solution at best.
An eSIM still requires an account with a carrier, which is optional when you setup a new phone.
Yes, but you can just contact an EU company that provides eSIMs and get one.
Yeah Iâm curious too. There doesnât seem like there is a good way.
Someone found some code that referenced geo-blocking features. So if you are physically in Europe, then it should work and when you are outside of Europe then it wouldnât.
Iâm not sure if they plan to use the os with way, but maybe they will.
Maybe turning on a vpn will do the trick.
Iâm guessing that they will lock it to Europe for some time, but in the next iOS update roll it out world wide as they see the writing on the wall.
But Apple always seems to find a way to disappoint.
Faraday cage and GPS simulator? A hackrf and some tinfoil can probably do it for a few hundred bucks
How are you getting an Internet connection in which to download, if youâre in a Faraday cage?
Wifi inside the cage?
A faraday cage doesnât neutralize all wireless communication in its area, just from passing through its walls. Meaning that any network hardware within the cage would work just fine. You could even just slip the antenna in and leave the rest of the unit outside if the cage isnât large enough.
Serious answer⊠the GPS (and location tracking in general) on an iPhone is disabled by default and youâre asked to opt-in when you set up a new device. You donât have to enable location features and you can change your mind later â on a case by case basis as well. So you an have GPS in maps and weather reports, but not allow the general system services to access your location.
Itâs likely to be based on your iOS account.
In order to use the EU store, your account just needs an EU address & credit card on file.
I say this because I have a coworker who came from Ukraine and today he asked me how to find the Tim Hortons app on the app store. His phone was still loading the EU store so there was no app found.
Once he changed his apple account address to Canada and added his Canadian card, he had access to the NA store.
This policy is so frustrating for me.
Iâm from the US but live in another country.
There are so many apps that are only available in one country or another so I effectively have two phones just so I can access all my banking apps and some streaming stuff.
You can create another Apple ID in the country you need. I am a Canadian in the US and couldnât change the country of my Apple ID because I have active subscriptions (another idiotic limitation) I created a second ID with a US address and CC. Downloaded US-only apps just fine and didnât lose my Canada-only ones either.
Iâm looking forward to FDroid both because I support open source and because itâll presumably be called Fapple or the Fapp Store and really disappoint some confused horny people when itâs just things like Termux and privacy apps.
More like F-Apple. Donât pronounce it.
Youâre talking about the internet, hereâŠ
I couldâve put NSFW tag on that. Maybe someone would like to pronounce FAPPLE aloud in a public transport and everyone start ro furiously masturbate? I canât take this responaibility. And are we really react IRL at what we read?

PS I got you, Iâm pretty much overusing obscene words there, Iâve just remembered that rage comic-era picture.
FiOS makes the most sense to follow the naming convention.
AltStore also already exists
Clickbait, still just rumours and speculation.
I mean, I agree with the rumours and speculation, but that doesnât make it any more confirmed.
I wonder how this will work where apple controls the OS and sort of controls the Dev tools.
To me that sounds like they wonât have to offer root access to users, which is no suprise, but will they be able to continue to require certification of apps, even if theyâre sold on other stores?
Iâve only just skimmed the legislation so far.
Root is absolutely not required, youâre correct. But I donât believe they would need to certify apps, since that kinda defeats one of the purposes.
This isnât just âpeople should be able to not pay Apple a feeâ itâs also âApple has unreasonable control of the ecosystem and that is bad.â The moment Apple is allowed to just turn down whatever they donât want on other stores, that second point is back in place.
Not to mention, Apple would be certifying apps either for free, or charging developers for that certification. Neither of which follows the spirit of the legislation.
I would love to see alternative operating systems, not just app stores.
Android or some other Linux based os on iPhone hardware anyone?
Some time ago this was only about the peripetials and drivers, now this is about all phones, tablets and smart thingsâŠ

SighâŠunzips
As much as iâm excited about this, ârumors predictâ and âthis is comingâ are not the same
I mean, what else could they do except comply?
Itâs Apple weâre talking about. They will find ways to continue gatekeeping this as hard as possible
I mean TBF, everyone speculated that Apple would do some wacky antics to avoid putting a USB C port in their phones, like providing an adapter or removing it altogether.
Think Different
I wish this was coming to Australia. I wish I didnât have to pay ~$150 AUD to put my app on the store and not make any money after buying their stupid laptop as well
Defeat the fuckingcapitalists
We need true freedom not surface level sideloading. We need to be able to freely modify our devices. If I want to I should be able to install Linux on my phone.
I guess you could do this on Android via a bootloader unlock, lots of work, and a cup of coffee.
I mean Android is a Linux kernel already so I guess you mean some other distro.
I want free as in freedom, not some watered down Google spyware. I donât care if it technically uses Linux if Iâm still not free.
There is nothing stopping you. Unlock the bootloader and you can do anything you want.
Write your own bootloader, os, etc. feel free.
I would but I use AT&T so my bootloader is locked, on top of that âwrite your ownâ is impossible when the OEM doesnât provide schematics.
Iâve had AT&T with an unlocked bootloader. My Pixel is unlocked and can be bootloader unlocked. Iâm sure you could find a phone that can have an unlocked bootloader.
Also, they have no reason to provide you with schematics or anything like that. Doing such a thing could give away a competitive advantage or give hints to competitors. If you really wanted, you could whip out the oscilloscope and trace leads, etc. You could also start with AOSP.
Once gain, youâre free to do whatever. Theyâre free to not give you info. Funny enough I guess in your case, theyâre free to restrict your bootloader. Freedom works in all directions: for better or worse.
Thatâs why I believe in copyleft and the GPL, when corporations are free to sell devices without explaining how they function the users have no rights.
You have the right to buy something else.
