No thanks. It’s all about data harvesting and ads now.

There was a time it was a neat product, but Amazon tech isn’t entering our household anymore.

Honestly it’s just a glorified Google TV with a nicer remote. I feel like the only Fire TV device that might be interesting enough to consider buying would be the Fire Cube or the Fire Recast but IDEK if they still work anymore.

While based on Google TV, they lock down the OS, control the app store, and force their apps. You’re in their walled garden and it’s a pain to break out in any meaningful way.

realcaseyrollins@thelemmy.club on 30 Sep 2024 16:27 collapse

Hmm…well it’s been a couple years since I used my Fire Stick but I remember being able to sideload Android TV apps on there just like I can now with my Google TV device.

Ebby@lemmy.ssba.com on 30 Sep 2024 16:36 collapse

If I recall you still can through ADB, but it’s a pain and they started locking that down too. Ad blocking VPN (at least the one I tried) didn’t work.

There was a big update about a year ago that very clearly sent the message “this device will show what we want you to see.”

Ah, that doesn’t shock me. Yeah I left when they started like disabling custom launchers or something, and I realized getting a Google TV would be easier than getting around that restriction.

Fucking ad for a Spyware infested piece of shit

My parents use some, they spam my PCs fucking firewall logs like hell. They also regulary get silent updates which make them slower and slower and slower (which shouldn’t be possible because it’s freezing all the time)

mosiacmango@lemm.ee on 30 Sep 2024 16:05 collapse

You should sideload Kodi or Jellyfin on it for them.

Moobythegoldensock@lemm.ee on 30 Sep 2024 16:19 next collapse

Dude I use Lemmy to not see ads, why are you posting this?

sunzu2@thebrainbin.org on 30 Sep 2024 16:31 collapse

AMZN paid some tech fake news rag to run this headline, some clown prolly got paid to post it here...

You know this works haha

Side note, if you buy it, jail break it :)

Moobythegoldensock@lemm.ee on 30 Sep 2024 16:42 collapse

I used to be into that, but Kodi started to become a pain after all the streamer quality got low, I had to pay for RealDebrid just to get a decent stream, I never quite got sports streaming to work with any of the apps, and the Firestick itself got ungodly slow over time.

I have PCs hooked up to all my TVs, so if I can’t find something on my streamers I can just open up my browser and google a solution.

sunzu2@thebrainbin.org on 30 Sep 2024 16:46 collapse

i was never big on jailbroken sticks but yeah i have been hearing from people that they are past their high point. i have been advising selfhosting but they whine about "sports ball" lol

Moobythegoldensock@lemm.ee on 30 Sep 2024 16:51 collapse

Luckily between Amazon and ESPN+ I can meet most of my sportsball needs. For those not on the apps, there are websites that can assist.

Engywuck@lemm.ee on 30 Sep 2024 16:59 collapse

No. I don’t give my money to Amazon. Fuck them.
