How many of those orders are Americans trying to get around import restrictions and tariffs?

Nikelui@lemmy.world on 23 Apr 14:39 next collapse

How many scalpers, also?

Chozo@fedia.io on 23 Apr 16:09 collapse

I think the tariffs might actually have one niche benefit of mitigating scalping. It's going to be even more expensive for scalpers to get their hands on an actual product now, and people are already struggling to justify the increased retail costs, as it is. I'd have to imagine it'll be much harder for scalpers to find a buyer these days, as anybody who can afford scalpers' fees plus tariffs likely wouldn't have any issue getting their hands on one, to begin with.

Jakeroxs@sh.itjust.works on 23 Apr 17:31 collapse

I don’t think it will effect scalping in the slightest, just lokm at how GPU prices skyrocketed and scalping was even worse of a problem. The scarcity increases demand and therefore increases how much they can charge.

Potentially.

SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world on 23 Apr 14:51 next collapse

I thought you couldn’t get in the lottery without an account for 12 months? I would assume they would know the geolocation of the account and only say the Japanese accounts in this.

SuiXi3D@fedia.io on 23 Apr 15:11 next collapse

None, they’re hardware region locked because they didn’t want scalpers buying up the cheaper Japanese units and selling them elsewhere. I believe manufacturing is split between regions as well, though I’m not sure to what degree.

FauxPseudo@lemmy.world on 23 Apr 15:22 collapse

Region locking can be dodged of you plan to buy region locked games, use a VPN.

missingno@fedia.io on 23 Apr 15:40 collapse

JP Switches will only play Japanese-language games. So for non-Japanese-speaking consumers, that will be a problem.

nave@lemmy.ca on 23 Apr 15:52 collapse

Also all the menus will be in japanese too.

primemagnus@lemmy.ca on 23 Apr 16:17 next collapse

It’s still got to get it to the US. You can’t circumvent Tarrifs unless you buy the item outside the country and lie at the border.

Buying elsewhere means when it hits your local customs, you pay the increase there.

MyTurtleSwimsUpsideDown@fedia.io on 23 Apr 17:07 collapse

In Japan, they are selling a Japanese language only model that is cheaper than the international version. Any Americans that don’t understand that and try to get around the tariffs are likely to be disappointed.

FauxPseudo@lemmy.world on 23 Apr 18:08 next collapse

I have never lost a bet that depends on my fellow Americans being disappointed because they failed to understand something.

ragebutt@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 23 Apr 18:24 collapse

I was considering purchase a Japanese switch 2 because my Japanese is decent enough for most gaming but then I saw it was region locked pretty hard so I can’t use any of my us e shop purchases. Plus fuck Nintendo, even without the tariffs the price on this thing is a bit much and their behavior is garbage

If I ever do get one it’ll be because someone broke theirs and I got it cheap as fuck and fixed it. That’s how I got my switch, had a busted battery management IC and a fucked usb C port. I think in total I paid like $90 for it with parts. It would also help if the console was exploited for piracy

Pika@sh.itjust.works on 23 Apr 14:23 next collapse

This is so dumb.

“We had way more preorders than expected, in order to fulfill our preorders, we will be delaying in store sales until after preorders have been completed”

that would be such a simple solution. It’s not like they are out any money either way, and pushing an instore sale date back to make other prior commitments work isn’t a horrible thing, it just means that people who didn’t bother to preorder won’t get it day 1, but most who wanted it day 1 would have pre-ordered it anyway.

missingno@fedia.io on 23 Apr 15:41 next collapse

They can't renege on deals they've already signed with retailers.

Aatube@kbin.melroy.org on 23 Apr 15:42 next collapse

It's always been lotteries in Japan.

testfactor@lemmy.world on 23 Apr 16:11 collapse

They probably don’t have the warehouse capacity to store all those extra units. There’s a lot of logistics involved in housing and shipping 2.2mil consoles, and “just wait” can be way harder than you would think.

Nighed@feddit.uk on 23 Apr 18:57 collapse

I think he meant to just not ship to stores until all the online, pre-release orders had been delivered.

phdepressed@sh.itjust.works on 23 Apr 20:25 next collapse

  1. Shipping probably already started.

  2. B2B deals will have fine print about when units will arrive and be “released”.

[deleted] on 24 Apr 01:33 next collapse

.

Pika@sh.itjust.works on 24 Apr 04:07 collapse

this is what i meant yea, just delay shipping to store outside the initial batch until all preorders are completed. Or in a perfect world not at all until preorders have been made.

Just have everyone join the queue and call it a day, or better yet, make release day a Nintendo only thing, and then after pre-orders are handled, then start giving to the stores.

SinningStromgald@lemmy.world on 23 Apr 15:37 next collapse

More confirmation that waiting a year or two before even considering buying a Switch2 is a good idea.

Japan is super into lottery based sales. Even for things like concerts

pm_me_anime_thighs@lemmynsfw.com on 24 Apr 05:49 collapse

Its a good way to combat scalpers and gives ordinary people at least a chance to buy it without spam refreshing a website only for bots to grab everything anyway.

pycorax@lemmy.world on 24 Apr 04:50 collapse

Personally I think it’s a much fairer system than letting bots scalp all units on their website. Unless you’d prefer that?

SharkAttak@kbin.melroy.org on 23 Apr 20:15 next collapse

..and this is why they march on with their shitty practices.

emb@lemmy.world on 23 Apr 20:18 next collapse

I appreciate them trying to set expectations. But then I also think a statement like this throws fuel on the fire, making more people want to scalp it.
