Honestly I’m wondering what Google’s long term plan for securing their productivity suite is. The amount of spam I get through Google drive share requests is shocking.

Check skiff.com one click move from Gmail and co. Encryption matters!

I signed up for skiff when looking at providers to move away from Gmail but the one thing that stopped me was they didn’t have a way to export mail. I know it’s on their list but until then I can’t use it.

Their free tier is very generous too. 10GB of storage would be ample for all my saved mail.

IMAP is good enough to “export” email. Not that hard tbh.

lemmyvore@feddit.nl on 07 Nov 2023 10:51 next collapse

Normally yes, but Skiff being an “encrypted email” service it doesn’t offer IMAP.

Swarfega@lemm.ee on 07 Nov 2023 10:57 collapse

Skiff don’t offer IMAP?

Decentralizr@lemmy.world on 07 Nov 2023 08:22 collapse

skiff.com/blog/gmail-import

And for proton and others all one click

Swarfega@lemm.ee on 07 Nov 2023 10:49 collapse

I said export not import.

lemmyvore@feddit.nl on 07 Nov 2023 10:57 collapse

And then never leave them again because all your mail is captive with no way to migrate it.

Encrypting email at rest is a fool’s errand. It doesn’t protect anything, it’s a waste of resources, makes you jump through hoops and use non-standard apps, keeps you captive to their service, but naive people feel good because “encryption”. Also Skiff are blatantly lying when they say it’s “end to end”.

I honestly hear the first time about this. Who sends you share requests?

Bipta@kbin.social on 07 Nov 2023 05:26 next collapse

Not the same person, but all sorts of random "people" - often with Cyrillic characters in the name.

Chozo@kbin.social on 07 Nov 2023 06:24 collapse

Basically anyone who knows your Gmail address can spam you with these requests. It's awful because I so rarely get Drive share requests, so I keep notifications on because if somebody actually needs to send me a legitimate file, I'd want to be alerted to it. And there doesn't appear to be much in the way of spam detection on this system.

Though that might have changed recently. I used to get these very frequently, but I don't think I've seen one for probably a year now. Maybe they finally started detecting spammy share requests? Or maybe I've just been lucky for a minute.

Am webmaster, can confirm. Huge security nuisance when people in our workgroup start getting drive share requests to malicious files. Especially if they can spoof an email on you through some subdomain you’re unable to protect with DKIM or something, and appear a part of your institution.
