Jokes on them, I don’t have any.

Oh. I made myself sad.

3ntranced@lemmy.world on 04 Sep 2024 18:28 collapse

It’s okay, Team Snapchat is the only person that sends me anything either (>•_•)><3

infeeeee@lemm.ee on 04 Sep 2024 12:09 next collapse

Is snapchat still a thing? Never used that but I thought from screenshots and memes that tiktok killed it (never used that either)

sheridan@lemmy.world on 04 Sep 2024 12:35 next collapse

I think it’s still used a lot for private messaging?

noodlejetski@lemm.ee on 04 Sep 2024 12:51 next collapse

“private”

Player2@lemm.ee on 04 Sep 2024 13:08 collapse

I think you mean ‘direct’ messaging

sheridan@lemmy.world on 04 Sep 2024 13:48 collapse

Maybe. I’ve only known Snapchat used for sending pictures of one’s privates, which is quite direct now that I think about it.

BearOfaTime@lemm.ee on 04 Sep 2024 17:17 collapse

Have they fixed the issue where anyone with the URL to your pic can see it?

As far as I’ve read, it’s never been private, let alone encrypted.

astanix@lemmy.world on 04 Sep 2024 12:38 next collapse

Mt family/friend group use it as a way to send pics/videos since MMS isn’t great for that… at least that’s what they say, I don’t have it.

xpinchx@lemmy.world on 04 Sep 2024 12:40 next collapse

Definitely, I have a few group chats. It’s good for general memery and snapping funny things throughout the day.

Telorand@reddthat.com on 04 Sep 2024 14:10 collapse

Me throughout my day:

I asked the same question, my friends all abandoned it for Instagram years ago, but I (an American) am seeing a lot of Europeans using it during my travels

Roldyclark@literature.cafe on 04 Sep 2024 13:12 next collapse

Gen Z loves it for some reason

thebestaquaman@lemmy.world on 04 Sep 2024 13:46 next collapse

I never understood that. Apparently they use it as a primary way of messaging each other? At least that’s what younger relatives have told me. I’ve tried to have them explain what makes the app designed to hide/delete stuff after it’s been read better for communication, but so far haven’t gotten an explanation I could make any sense of.

Roldyclark@literature.cafe on 04 Sep 2024 15:17 next collapse

Yeah my brother says its the main way to talk to girls, which sexting was its original purpose so makes sense. But also the streak system and ease of picture messaging I think keeps people using it.

sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works on 05 Sep 2024 07:59 collapse

I guess I’m too boomer to understand it, because I hate the idea of “picture messaging.” Text is so much easier to interact with…

[deleted] on 05 Sep 2024 03:21 collapse

.

independantiste@sh.itjust.works on 04 Sep 2024 15:19 collapse

Tbh I only know 2-3 people who use it actively. Most use instagram DMs. I like snapchat for the face filters though

TheFriar@lemm.ee on 04 Sep 2024 15:41 next collapse

I used it to receive nudes and spicy pics from one girl I dated. Downloaded it for that purpose alone. Deleted it when we stopped talking

catloaf@lemm.ee on 04 Sep 2024 17:47 collapse

Nobody I know my age (early 30s) uses it any more. Instagram stories killed Snapchat stories. I don’t know if Instagram has a disappearing messages option though.

SuperSleuth@lemm.ee on 04 Sep 2024 12:19 next collapse

Are they stupid? In fairness, I don’t know how they’re making any money at all. I’ve never seen anyone interact with the discover feed and therefore see ads. There really isn’t a way to monetize Snapchat without killing it off.

_haha_oh_wow_@sh.itjust.works on 04 Sep 2024 12:52 next collapse

No it isn’t: I don’t use SnapChat!

ieatpwns@lemmy.world on 04 Sep 2024 12:53 next collapse

I wish we made more offensive memes using established brands that way we can keep their ads out of our online spaces

the_post_of_tom_joad@sh.itjust.works on 04 Sep 2024 14:07 collapse

I would like it very much if the first thing that came up in a casual search for any business was sweaty rule 34 fantasies

Company logos on buttplugs, the advertisement of the future.

ZeroTwo@lemmy.world on 04 Sep 2024 13:07 next collapse

Well if this happens I’m getting rid of it. Yeah I’m older and I use it. But it’s great for the girlfriend and I to quickly send messages and nsfw things. Now that I think about it, I only use it because of her.

These ads will be the last straw. The stupid AI chatbot forces itself to the top of your list already, and above that, they throw in a stupid Snapchat+ ad! Oh yeah, in order to delete the AI bot as a friend, you need Snapchat+…

sunzu2@thebrainbin.org on 04 Sep 2024 14:05 next collapse

nsfw things

Why would you use unencrypted social media for that?

You do understand that Snapchat keeps a copy?

beefbot@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 04 Sep 2024 17:41 collapse

Not in Canada where the “girlfriend” “lives” they don’t 🤪

sunzu2@thebrainbin.org on 04 Sep 2024 17:43 collapse

I think I missed the "girlfriend" part lol

Goodtoknow@lemmy.ca on 04 Sep 2024 15:24 next collapse

Use signal which has temporary messages

BearOfaTime@lemm.ee on 04 Sep 2024 17:15 next collapse

The ads are the last straw? Hahaha

Unencrypted shit show of a “service”.

Have they fixed the problem where if someone has the URL, they can see your NSFW pics?

Yes 🤡

Jode@midwest.social on 04 Sep 2024 15:24 next collapse

Anyone know of any alternatives with similar functionality?

affiliate@lemmy.world on 04 Sep 2024 15:38 next collapse

telegram has “secret chats” that let you set a self destruct timer for all messages sent in those chats. i don’t know of many other alternatives. and even telegram isn’t a drop in replacement, but it could work, depending on what you’re looking for

devfuuu@lemmy.world on 04 Sep 2024 15:57 collapse

Just use Signal with disappearing messages feature turned on?

affiliate@lemmy.world on 04 Sep 2024 16:02 collapse

that sounds like a better choice to be honest. i haven’t used signal much and i didn’t know they supported that sort of thing

phoneymouse@lemmy.world on 04 Sep 2024 17:55 collapse

Signal has stories. Never seen anyone use them though.

Me: ? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

21Cabbage@lemmynsfw.com on 04 Sep 2024 20:27 collapse

Somebody asked where they could find me on social media the other day and my response was “strange places using fake names”. Eventually turned into me trying to pitch the fediverse but it kinda landed in much the way birds don’t.

homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world on 05 Sep 2024 00:46 collapse

sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works on 05 Sep 2024 07:58 collapse

swan@lemmy.world on 04 Sep 2024 18:34 next collapse

Remember Snapchat had the cool feature of showing you “today, X years ago”?
Why did they fuck that up and you get random collages now. It was such a great feature that they have now ruined

Ibuthyr@discuss.tchncs.de on 04 Sep 2024 20:50 collapse

Isn’t that what Google photos does too? I’m slowly degoogling but I must say, I do enjoy that feature. It kinda gives purpose to the random pictures one takes.

xelar@lemmy.ml on 05 Sep 2024 08:25 next collapse

Is snapchat still relevant?

TexMexBazooka@lemm.ee on 05 Sep 2024 10:46 collapse

Honestly Snapchat was fun, but what killed it for me was when it started randomly adding/following users when my account was inactive for a while. So I’d start getting notifications about xyz posting, and I don’t even know who they are

I’m convinced they’re doing this to pad user activity
