Then we think about it and ask ourselves what worker abuses Musk has perpetrated here on earth, and what would he do when Earthly laws can no longer apply. The more I think about what it would be like in the SpaceX Mars Colony, the more dystopian it gets.

This might be one of Twitter’s automatic security features I’d heard about a while back (prior to the Musk takeover). Supposedly, Twitter stops accounts from getting a large amount of followers in a short amount of time to try to limit botting. Not sure. My significant other used to follow football games on there while I was watching them live because she felt it help her understand what was going on. From what I saw it was good at having quick updates, but terrible at relaying accurate information. Mostly just dumb opinions that were proven wrong seconds later. It helped her learn people’s names though, not so much anything more about positions, formations, plays, or any kind of strategy. All of the drama with none of the reason it seemed to me, but I was bias I’m sure.
Hypothetical example, it would show someone pissed about a bad call, but never explain that the call was supposed to be lowering the crown of their helmet and using the helmet as a battering ram in a way that would increase safety risks for players. So unless I explained the bad call after, all they see is the play quickly, arguing and drama, but never know the reason. (Which the announcers would try to explain in many scenarios, but that audio would not show on Twitter)

I can relate to that, I normally go to those websites that have the live stats and stuff but I wouldn’t create an account just for that.
The bigger shocker to me is that the platform still exists at all… didn’t the largest advertisers pull out? I thought it was hemeraging money. I keep waiting for them to pull the plug on it, or at least sell it at a huge discounted price.
“The owner or operator of a social media website who contracts with a social media website user in this State is subject to a private right of action by a user if the social media website purposely: … (2) uses an algorithm to disfavor, shadowban, or censure the user’s religious speech or political speech”.
In May 2022, the US Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit ruled to strike the law (and similarly there was a 5th Circuit judgement), but just this month the US Supreme Court vacated the Court of Appeals judgement (i.e. reinstated the law) and remanded it back to the respective Court of Appeals. That said, the grounds for doing that were the court had not done the proper analysis, and after they do that it might be struck down again. But for now, the laws are technically not struck down.
It would be ironic if after conservatives passed this law, and stacked the supreme court and got the challenge to it vacated, the first major use of it was used against Xitter for censoring Harris!

Or share a small dark prison cell just about anywhere and have the same, if not better, effect.
I’ve got a wall they could share
Just don’t give them a rope.
They could both live on musk’s mars colony, the first rockets are set to start as early as 2018!
I’m ashamed to say that when he was talking about that originally, I was gullible enough to think a one-way Mars trip would be worth doing.
I mean, I still think that, in the abstract, if we could make a good plan and trust the people back home. But I did not understand what massive pieces of shit billionaires all were and what a terrible idea it would be to volunteer for humanity’s very first off-world company town.
The fantasy of a pioneering life on Mars is an easy one to love, especially if we assume it’s actually well enough established that you have all the excitement of Frontier life and none of the struggle to survive. It’s not gullibility, it’s hope.
Then we think about it and ask ourselves what worker abuses Musk has perpetrated here on earth, and what would he do when Earthly laws can no longer apply. The more I think about what it would be like in the SpaceX Mars Colony, the more dystopian it gets.
I would expect somewhat of a struggle to survive even in a well-run Mars colony, but otherwise I agree in general.
And I don’t think we even need to look at Musk’s personal history, just any knowledge of what capitalists have done any time they’ve had access to a captive workforce. It’s pretty clear they wouldn’t be pioneers, they’d be prisoners.
Yeah but make sure they cant build a way back here first
This might be one of Twitter’s automatic security features I’d heard about a while back (prior to the Musk takeover). Supposedly, Twitter stops accounts from getting a large amount of followers in a short amount of time to try to limit botting. Sometimes, rarely, it can trigger when a large amount of real people follow a real account.
I think I heard about it when I ran into the issue myself, but I don’t remember what account it was that I was trying to follow.
Go away with your sensible explanations, we have conspiracy to uncover.
Trump’s going to be mad that x is becoming a direct competitor to truth social
People big enough to have a staffed social media team will stilk have an Xitter account just because it is a viable vector to get news out. They may also have Truth Social account, just because it’s there.
I agree with you and I will not let them off the hook. They have no legitimate excuse to be using racist, misogynist, transphobic, homophobic, bigoted right-wing platforms.
Do they also have a stormfront account? Fuck anyone who contributes to fascist owned platforms just because they are there.
Well put.
I don’t mind them having account there. They need to reach people where they are after all. I’m pissed at them for not being on any platform that is not owned by a fascist enabler oligarch at best.
.
It’s funny (scary) how the police and fire department never post to thir own websites about important timely information and updates.
It’s in twitter and Facebook. I use neither anymore. Because obvious reasons.
This week, I could only find reference to the smell of natural gas covering half our city via a news site that quoted the FD’s twitter.
Great work, guys!
Shocking that people are still using Shitter in 2024.
Anybody still using it at this point deserves all the brain damage it causes. No excuses.
Sadly, people with brain damage but aren’t vegetables can still vote (poorly).
All the shitter domains are on my DNS block list. Happier for it.
Is it? It’s where most people still post publicly, and until someone unseats Twitter on that throne (which I hope is really soon) no other network is going to compete in terms of having the users people want to follow…
Shitter is just one website. If I post to mastodon, people on hundreds of websites can see my content. Why on earth would I post to shitter if I wanted visibility???
What if you want visibility with the idiots on Twitter? A place built by idiots, for idiots.
Because one website with millions of users is more reach than 100 websites with few users. Doesn’t mean you should use Ex-Twitter but it makes it understandable why lots still do
Millions of users is a bit of a misleading term. You mean millions of Nazis. I don’t care to talk to Nazis.
I do. Because some of them might be able to be brought to reason. I still don’t use Ex-Twitter anymore though, since they’ve blocked third party apps.
A whale is just one animal. If I look at my driveway, I can see hundreds of ants. Why on earth would I look anywhere else if I wanted to see animals?
I don’t mind them having account there. They need to reach people where they are after all. I’m pissed at them for not being on any platform that is not owned by a fascist enabler oligarch at best.
I’m going to login for the first time in years just to follow Kamala Harris then log off again lol
Why do you need to see what celebs post? I never had twitter and for sure I will never have X, honestly I never understood the point, is it Facebook with smaller posts?
He is going to wait with pulling the plug until at least after the US elections
Isn’t that, like, illegal?
No. That doesn’t make it right though.
Still being on Twitter? Immoral and destructive, but still legal.
No, if you are rich enough.
the corporatocracy is an authoritarian dictatorship and there’s nothing you can do about it
Maybe technically in Florida and Texas, given that they passed a law to try to stop sites deplatforming Trump.
www.scstatehouse.gov/…/3102.htm
People stupid enough to support fascism aren’t smart enough to recognize that it can be used against them
It’s the same stupid that thinks a dictator will preserve their freedom.
The same people who think a narcissistic billionaire is “one of them” because he says all the stupid things they’re thinking.
It would be Fascism.
Why not both
Ironically, there is nothing ironic about fascism.
Of course not, fuck fascism, but even fascists can say ironic/moronic bullshit :)
Even without all that messing with stuff too much is bound to clash with protections those kinds of sites have around editorialising. That is, by doing such stuff X says “we’re not actually a pinboard, we’re a newspaper, we’re editorially responsible for what’s on there”, and then prosecution can come along and say “so, your newspaper published an article calling for <crime>, didn’t it? That’s your speech now, not speech of some random user, isn’t it?”.
What do they even expect? They know who’s site they are using.
The remaining users are 100% in denial that it’s a Nazi website now.
Nah a lot of them are just actual Nazis.
Ew I. Accidently clicked on a twitter link I ieel so dirty
elon is just mad he’s stuck with the painfully dull dud jd vance
Why is anyone still on, “The Social Media Platform Formerly Known As Twitter” ?
Preaching to the choir.
Its still twitter. You can’t take the twit out as long as a twit owns it.
Concidence? Obviously… Elon The Musky Husky is a champion of Free Speech afterall. /s
Not technology.
No surprise.
Which goes to show that if you are a public figure whether in politics, entertainment, or otherwise, owning your own server for social media instead of relying on Zuck and Musk should be a critical concern at this point.
There is no reason for the Harris campaign to not dip their toe into federated social media at this point given Musk’s antagonism towards them.
And it’s so cheap to run. The only reason it’s not as worth is the limited reach and impact. But if main political figures would adopt it, the users and journalists would certainly come.
Can you post snippets of mastodon posts on websites like you can tweets?
You mean embedding posts or something else? fedi.tips/how-to-embed-mastodon-posts-on-a-websit…
But isn’t that inherintly dangerous? I don’t exactly trust any random fedi server to embed it in my website.
Kind of, in that embedding anything from a site you can’t trust is inherently risky, but I’d say it’s not actually that bad, for two reasons:
