This is the best summary I could come up with:

On the flip side, it could be a blow to display makers that do not have much presence in this segment, including JDI and Sharp of Japan, and AUO and Innolux of Taiwan.

Apple has also started evaluating the possibility of making foldable iPads after it deploys the flexible OLED screens on the tablet, but it does not have a concrete timeline for doing so, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

Huawei, for instance, has been a significant driver of this trend, which in turn has helped strengthen the Chinese display supply chain.

Having both the industry leaders using OLED for their tablets would likely convince other brands to follow suit, further stimulating supply chain investments for the technology.

The rising penetration of OLED in the smartphone, tablet and personal computer markets will “inevitably” add pressure on the traditional LCD display suppliers, the analyst said.

“It is unavoidable that we will see more LCD display makers downsizing their capacity of the screen with the use of OLED is growing in the market,” Fan said.

“Apple to claim they invented OLED” ftfy

BearOfaTime@lemm.ee on 16 Dec 2023 21:42 next collapse

Lol, right?

I love the caption on the top picture:

Apple is the leader in the global tablet computer market thanks to its popular iPad lineup.

No, it’s thanks to no one else really begin in the tablet market. iPads are frustratingly limited, by iOS. I’d go buy an Android tablet, but they’re really aren’t many to choose from (and I use an iPad every day).

Auk@kbin.social on 16 Dec 2023 22:30 next collapse

It's not like other manufacturers haven't tried (and some still are trying), people just tend to buy ipads instead.

Squizzy@lemmy.world on 16 Dec 2023 23:04 next collapse

It’s 100% because of their iPads, there are plenty of alternatives but none stand up against the iPad. Everytime a new flagship tablet comes out it is thought to be the iPad killer.

They created the market and dominate it. They’re fucks like but they’re not wrong here.

ripcord@kbin.social on 16 Dec 2023 23:06 next collapse

I mean, they're the leader because people are buying them the most.

There's also quite a few Android tablet options. No one is really buying them mostly because they're not great (personally, I really liked the ChromeOS tablets I bought but no one seems to want those either so the options for those are genuinely hard to find any options for).

But if the iPads are basically the best in the market despite not being everything you wish they were, I'm not getting the argument with their point.

Why is the surface even on this list? It’s an actual computer and it’s like 4 years older than the others? It’s not even in the same category.

The iPad’s popularity is the reason no one else is really in the tablet market anymore. Every OEM was pushing out a tablet in every size about a month ago but failed to make any decent amount of sales to stay relevant.

The Android space is getting more varied again in recent years but I really wouldn’t recommend one to an average user over an iPad.

TheRealKuni@lemmy.world on 17 Dec 2023 00:04 next collapse

frustratingly limited, by iOS

To be nitpicky, they separated out iPadOS from iOS a while back. The two share many features still but iPadOS can do more.

Still not full MacOS level though, even on the m1/m2 iPad Pro models. Disappointingly.

tf are you talking about? There’s only 134 models since january 2022.

Android tablet market is as lively as the Android phone market.

I’m using Galaxy Tab S7+ and it is real nice. I don’t know what people do with their tablet but I never understood why some people say that Android tablet is garbage. I’ve used iPad too and I was very much frusted with their lack of proper file management/closed nature of the OS than lack of some better-polished apps on Android.

Even the non-pros have OLED. I think it’s any iPhone with FaceID.

techgearwhips@lemmy.world on 17 Dec 2023 14:23 collapse

The XR and 11 (non Pro) had LCD. The 12 and 12 Pro have the same exact OLED screen, so that’s when they stopped using LCD on the lower models with Face ID.

mtchristo@lemm.ee on 17 Dec 2023 11:01 collapse

I think they used Samsung’s AMOLED and not LG’s OLED. Which are two different techs

jose1324@lemmy.world on 18 Dec 2023 11:37 collapse

Amoled is just a fancy name and filter for oled.

just_another_person@lemmy.world on 16 Dec 2023 23:11 next collapse

Because they need new reasons to keep prices artificially high, not because of consumer preferences.

Honesty I’m a little bit concerned if they swich Macs as that will be a pretty good indicator of how resistive to OLED burn in modern panels are. A device you scroll social media and watch videos on is one thing. But for a lot of people you will have the same static elements on screen for hours at a time on a laptop or desktop.

Well honesty it would be kinda amusing to watch apple have to give out a bunch of free oled panels if lot’s of people get bad burn in.

idunnololz@lemmy.world on 16 Dec 2023 23:48 next collapse

Yeah as a developer I feel like my IDE is going to burn in.

raldone01@lemmy.world on 17 Dec 2023 14:40 collapse

Just don’t resize the panels and yur good. If you never display anything else burn in won’t be an issue.

And since you code so fast the characters won’t burn in.

idunnololz@lemmy.world on 17 Dec 2023 17:56 collapse

🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

Ok but what if the ide gets redesigned

raldone01@lemmy.world on 17 Dec 2023 18:41 collapse

Ohhh I guess you will have to maintain a fork of the old ui. 😬 So better use an oss IDE.

Not ideal.

Synthead@lemmy.world on 17 Dec 2023 08:41 next collapse

Burn in is pretty much a solved problem now. I have several OLED devices that each display static graphics and there is no visible burn in.

Hadriscus@lemm.ee on 17 Dec 2023 11:02 next collapse

Really ? even after, like, three years of daily use ?

kusivittula@sopuli.xyz on 17 Dec 2023 12:08 next collapse

i’ve had my lg oled tv as a pc monitor for 3 years. daily use, mostly 60% brightness, no burn-in at all.

Synthead@lemmy.world on 17 Dec 2023 15:45 collapse

Yep! My OLED TV has sat around at 100% brightness with a taskbar sitting there for more than 5 years. No burn in at all. I’ve even watched those “burn in tester” videos to try to find it on purpose, too. I can’t notice a thing.

RotaryKeyboard@lemmy.sdf.org on 17 Dec 2023 18:21 collapse

That’s amazing! I’ve been living in fear of my super expensive OLED TV getting burn-in. I turn it off during software updates, etc. Now maybe I can de-stress a little.

moercy@lemmy.world on 17 Dec 2023 14:01 collapse

Are you sure they’re turned on? Not that they’ve burned in the static graphics :)

SLGC@lemmy.world on 17 Dec 2023 09:45 next collapse

My ultra cynical take is that burn-in is a business feature that will force people to repair or upgrade sooner rather than later.

LainOfTheWired@lemy.lol on 18 Dec 2023 17:33 collapse

I mean they already do it with their cables. Especially mag safe chargers as you can’t remove the cable

MeanEYE@lemmy.world on 17 Dec 2023 15:41 collapse

Especially considering they have a top menu bar and launcher always in the same place. Burn-in will be visible within a year, if not sooner. However Apple will give nothing for free, not unless there’s a threat of class action lawsuit.

NENathaniel@lemmy.ca on 17 Dec 2023 16:10 collapse

OLED iPad would be sick, that’s the only flaw with my 2020 iPad Pro

9point6@lemmy.world on 18 Dec 2023 09:49 collapse

I’m still rocking my 2017 iPad Pro, and honestly until this announcement, the only thing I really felt I was missing was the USB-C port.

I might finally have enough of a reason to upgrade now

NENathaniel@lemmy.ca on 18 Dec 2023 18:10 collapse

Yea Lightning sucks haha, that’ll be a nice upgrade
