Why would anyone use their real email on 4chan? I wouldn’t touch it without at least a proxy or two and a vpn.

MelodiousFunk@slrpnk.net on 15 Apr 16:57 next collapse

Gonna need seven firewalls for that kind of work.

Vegasvator@lemmy.today on 15 Apr 17:51 collapse

You don’t need an email at all to post on 4chan. You don’t register to use 4chan or post on 4chan. The only logins are for staff. People are making up and spreading rumors that don’t even know how 4chan works.

wise_pancake@lemmy.ca on 15 Apr 17:53 next collapse

I haven’t used 4chan since like 2008, so no idea how its changed.

I do remember a username/password mechanic but can’t remember how it worked.

theunknownmuncher@lemmy.world on 15 Apr 18:14 next collapse

It just added a hash of the password to your posts so that others could verify which user made the post. These hashes were easily cracked though. The username could be anything you want. There was no account creation

Uranium_Green@sh.itjust.works on 15 Apr 18:17 collapse

Trip codes are I think what you’re taking about, not all boards had them enabled but they were a way of authenticating a user on the boards that did

homicidalrobot@lemm.ee on 15 Apr 18:44 collapse

You haven’t been there in a few years clearly, they added a rate limit (Waiting period) to posting initially from mobile devices and a timer between posts that you can skip by registering an email a while back. You can also purchase a 4chan pass to bypass this completely, which requires an associated registered account. It’s interesting to see people who haven’t interacted with the site in a long time espousing that they have expert opinions on it.

expatriado@lemmy.world on 15 Apr 16:49 next collapse

those are not the .edu ICE is looking for, unless for recruiting purposes

However, Jared Holt, a senior researcher at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, points out that in terms of wilder rumors about .edu and .gov email addresses in the leaked lists, “the source for this claim was not legit…after spending the morning with what materials I could halfway assess as legit I am sad to report that this is a real snoozer.”

come on man, read the article lol

Heard about this just a few hours ago, and have been laughing ever since. This is going to be brutal, there are people who registered with .gov e-mail addresses. As the use of 4chan has been cited to me as potentially disqualifying people seeking security clearance for government, police, or military careers, this hack single-handedly has the potential to torpedo thousands of edgy bois in one fell swoop.

arrakark@lemmy.ca on 15 Apr 17:13 next collapse

Just wondering, what org specifically asks for 4chan use?

TrojanRoomCoffeePot@lemmy.world on 15 Apr 19:13 collapse

I’ve been told that for clearance above reliability that social media use becomes an issue. 4chan was specifically cited to me by the person with whom I spoke. I’d assume that this means any/all alphabet government agencies, but Army was all that I heard about specifically.

“Do you browse or use 4chan?”

“No.”

“OK, good, because you weren’t advancing beyond this stage if you said yes.”

Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works on 15 Apr 19:50 collapse

Unregrettably I don’t know how that community works but wouldn’t 90% of 4chan users say they don’t use 4chan?

TrojanRoomCoffeePot@lemmy.world on 15 Apr 19:54 collapse

Sure, but lying during a process involving security clearance would essentially hang over their head the entire time that they used the credential as a means to get work. It’s not like lying about whether or not you like the food that someone served at a dinner, it sticks.

phoenixarise@lemmy.world on 15 Apr 17:19 next collapse

I’ll never understand anyone that uses their school or work emails for social networking.

wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world on 15 Apr 20:01 collapse

I mean, is there even any verification? Or could I just register as bigboners69@harvard.edu or potus@us.gov?

Vegasvator@lemmy.today on 15 Apr 17:46 next collapse

Keep dreaming. 4chan only has registration for staff. All you have to do to post on 4chan is a captcha. Did you even read the article? It addresses the .edu and .gov rumor as false.

TrojanRoomCoffeePot@lemmy.world on 15 Apr 19:13 collapse

If you say so, I’ll take your word for it.

I_Has_A_Hat@lemmy.world on 15 Apr 20:19 collapse

baatliwala@lemmy.world on 15 Apr 17:31 next collapse

… You can register on 4chan?

peregrin5@lemm.ee on 15 Apr 17:39 collapse

Even bigger question: why would you register on 4chan? Isn’t the whole point anonymity?

ImplyingImplications@lemmy.ca on 15 Apr 21:34 collapse

The only people who would register would be janitors, mods, and admins. There are 4chan passes where you pay $20 a year to skip captchas and have a lower post cooldown which works by associating a token with an IP address. The token is emailed to you and you get reminder emails when the token is expiring so you can renew it. So 4chan would likely have emails for pass users too. Pass users still post anonymously. I don’t know the exact stat but I remember the owner saying something like only 1% of users have a pass.

Fizz@lemmy.nz on 15 Apr 17:56 next collapse

This is kind of a nothing burger since most users dont register any details. There is no data to be gathered. The real surprise will be how they got compromised.
