[Rumor] Apple To Issue New Software Update For iPhone 12 To Bring Its Radiation Down To Acceptable Levels (wccftech.com)

To prevent the iPhone 12 from being banned in France, Apple is reportedly working to release a software update that is said to bring down the radiation levels to accommodate the request of French regulators. Before being officially released back in 2020, it was reported that Apple knew about this problem and instructed its employees to stay quiet about the whole thing. It does not appear that there will be any legal repercussions against the California-based giant this time.

The funniest part of this is that it’s JavaScript.

Fine!

let radiationLevel = 4

We will issue a software update for users in France…

So this applies to only devices sold in France? I’d love to know what changes to the software are being made to deal with radiation.

geosoco@kbin.social on 15 Sep 2023 17:33 next collapse

if i had to guess, it's setting power limits on the cell/wifi radio chip.

LazaroFilm@lemmy.world on 15 Sep 2023 18:29 collapse

France loosing one network bar.

The word “radiation” has unfortunately been commandeered by idiots to mean “TOXIC MAGIC AIR”. Lightbulbs radiate (produce light).

In this case they’re 100% just reducing the gain on the phone’s signal strength. No harm prevented. Purely regulatory.

LazaroFilm@lemmy.world on 15 Sep 2023 18:28 next collapse

A rock thrown in a pond radiates too. You capping your hands, boom radiations.

So, I happen to know about a huge, unshielded nuclear reactor near a major population center.

There are millions of documented cases of deadly cancer directly caused by its high energy emissions, even kids are often exposed to hazardous levels.

It’s called the sun.

Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world on 15 Sep 2023 18:24 next collapse

Probably going to throttle it a bit. The only issue is that the power level of the radios in the phone make it a little too warm when you have it to your face.

ultratiem@lemmy.ca on 17 Sep 2023 14:55 collapse

Yes it’s a special update for that region alone. Apple does this quite often when a country requires special treatment. It rarely makes the news because well it’s not really news.

Probably just dial down the power emitted like some high end routers let you do in settings. It’ll make the cell service weaker but I don’t think Apple cares much for a device they no longer sell or manufacture anymore.

Rhaedas@kbin.social on 15 Sep 2023 17:27 next collapse

French users: "After the patch I can't seem to keep as strong a signal as before."

Apple: "..."

I do wonder, why would France accept a software patch? The device is still capable of going over the limits and it could easily be reverted later?

Seems like an odd solution.

root@precious.net on 16 Sep 2023 07:07 next collapse

Software radios can do many things that are against the rules, the governing bodies only care about how they’re actually being used for the most part.

Also, the measurements are over time. It’s possible to exceed the total allowed in short bursts.

ultratiem@lemmy.ca on 17 Sep 2023 14:52 collapse

It has the potential but never will thanks to the software update. What’s the struggle here!?

NegativeLookBehind@kbin.social on 15 Sep 2023 18:00 next collapse

The radiation is the equivalent of a chest x ray. Not great, not terrible.

Whoever downvotes really needs to watch Chernobyl on HBO.

ieightpi@lemmy.world on 15 Sep 2023 18:16 next collapse

I thought it was EM radiation

engityra@kbin.social on 15 Sep 2023 20:12 next collapse

All radiation (x-rays included), radio waves, and visible light are on the EM spectrum. It's just the wavelength that differentiates them.

otter@lemmy.ca on 15 Sep 2023 21:41 collapse

It’s all EM, but you’re thinking along the right lines

I think the term you want is “non ionizing” radiation

ieightpi@lemmy.world on 16 Sep 2023 02:16 collapse

Yes thank you

MightEnlightenYou@lemmy.world on 15 Sep 2023 18:33 next collapse

I’m not a fan of Apple but saying that this radiation is akin to gamma radiation in some way its just ignorant.

Here’s a source for the radiation levels for everybody else: reuters.com/…/apple-disputes-french-findings-says…

EncryptKeeper@lemmy.world on 15 Sep 2023 18:35 next collapse

It is most certainly not lol

WalkableProgrammer@lemmy.world on 15 Sep 2023 18:23 next collapse

Wow apple took away the free chemo feature /s

ripcord@kbin.social on 15 Sep 2023 18:46 next collapse

Soo... France determined that levels were higher than regulations allowed and asked Apple to fix it. And the latest news is that Apple is looking into fixing it.

What a story!

otter@lemmy.ca on 15 Sep 2023 21:33 next collapse

Yup

People said it in the other threads, but this is just boring regulatory processes at work. It’s just a story because popscience type outlets ran with the word radiation

scarabic@lemmy.world on 16 Sep 2023 03:30 collapse

Never underestimate the clickbait potential of the word “radiation.”
