This is the best summary I could come up with:

The social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has removed the gold “verified” badge from the New York Times’ account amid ongoing complaints about the news organization from X owner Elon Musk.

The move further extends Musk’s attempts to use the social media company he bought with claims of defending free speech to undercut news organizations he dislikes.

In April, after Musk bought the company for $44 billion, X ended its years-old system of giving badges to politicians, journalists and other public figures whose identity it had verified.

After The Post reported on the delay, X removed it for the Times without explanation but kept it in place for other X competitors, including Facebook, Instagram, Substack and Bluesky, according to a technical analysis from the news outlet The Markup.

That steep drop outpaces an industry-wide slowdown in referrals to top news sites from X and Facebook this year, according to industry data from the analytics firm Similarweb first reported by Axios.

In the months since Musk bought X, the social media site has cut back on content moderation, suspended journalists, reinstated neo-Nazis and threatened to file defamation lawsuits against critics such as the Anti-Defamation League.

Man-baby continues to act like baby; world shocked.

When NPR left twitter they found it had a minimal effect on their traffic.

I wonder if EM realises that letting news outlets know how little influence his toy has will work out the way he expects.

Not_Alec_Baldwin@lemmy.world on 20 Oct 2023 16:46 collapse

I wonder if advertisers will wake up and realize it too.

This is a very interesting technological development. I’m pleased that I can keep up with all the latest advances like this in the technology community.

"So fucking what if an oligarch is using his position of power over a method of mass communication to shape public discourse to his will? I WANNA HEAR ABOUT ROBO DOGS OR SOME SHIT!"

Then fucking post about robo dogs. Contribute or STFU about what IS contributed.

Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works on 20 Oct 2023 02:31 next collapse

Fair point re: contributing vs complaining. I think it’s tough to argue this is technology news though, how important it is as news isn’t the issue, there are other news communities.

echo64@lemmy.world on 20 Oct 2023 02:57 collapse

Very sane reaction

hiddengoat@kbin.social on 20 Oct 2023 05:18 collapse

Reddit-tier effort in your response.

Pons_Aelius@kbin.social on 20 Oct 2023 05:28 collapse

Why is it that those that invoke reddit are the ones who's comments remind me the most of the anger and lack of civility I remember from there?

hiddengoat@kbin.social on 20 Oct 2023 05:33 collapse

Because you blindly associate the word "reddit" with shit-tier posting and assholery.

Which is precisely what I was intending to evoke to illustrate how garbage the comment I was responding to is.

So, mission accomplished. I'm gonna go have a snack.

Pons_Aelius@kbin.social on 20 Oct 2023 05:39 collapse

how garbage the comment I was responding to is.

While you post is pure quality.

I WANNA HEAR ABOUT ROBO DOGS OR SOME SHIT!"

hiddengoat@kbin.social on 20 Oct 2023 05:44 collapse

More quality than yet another blathering imbecile whining that the content of a particular post isn't what they want to fucking see.

Downvote and move on, or fucking contribute more content you want to see.

Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works on 20 Oct 2023 08:26 collapse

Don’t worry, I’m not yet another blathering idiot. Pretty sure I’m the same one, at least I’ve posted about this problem in one of the many other Musk threads on here before.

I agree downvoting and moving on is probably best and that’s what I’ve mostly been doing but I couldn’t resist posting a bit of a quip this time in a moment of weakness.

Harvey656@lemmy.world on 20 Oct 2023 04:50 next collapse

Do we really need this in Technology community? Is there a way we can put this stuff as against the rules?

dramaticcat@sh.itjust.works on 20 Oct 2023 04:57 next collapse

Ask the mods to make Muskrat posts against the rules. I see nothing wrong with posting it here and EMS.

maniel@lemmy.ml on 20 Oct 2023 05:53 next collapse

It’s not that it’s about Musk, the post just isn’t technology related, it’s just a petty drama on some site

I agree.

Virkkunen@kbin.social on 20 Oct 2023 08:00 collapse

Pretty much everything twitter/X related was and is going to be nothing but petty drama on some site with overreacting toxic people.

plz1@lemmy.world on 20 Oct 2023 04:51 collapse

NYT should just abandon it like NPR did when they were labeled as “state media”. NPR recently said it had near zero impact on their site traffic.

I would love this
