For those who lurk on Reddit - my ad-free, open source Reddit viewer RDX is an iPhone app now (apps.apple.com)
from overdevs@lemmy.world to technology@lemmy.world on 18 Jun 2024 16:06
https://lemmy.world/post/16670881

Posting the update here because most of the users of RDX come from Lemmy community only.

Why?

A lot of users asked for a more polished viewer with more features and users in the EU now can not add web apps to home screen, so I spent some time building an iOS app. You can also save images and videos/gifs from Reddit now. It’s stil completely free (with an optional donate option available), the web app also works.

You can download the app here

My reddit web viewer still works! Story: When reddit killed 3rd party apps, I uploaded a web viewer I have been using for myself to Github pages for everyone to use…

If you want to lurk on Reddit, you can use this web reader I built for myself when I got inspired by the Apollo app years ago

Spez can get fucked. Not going to lurk there, but if I do need to ever view any reddit content, the best fuck you way of doing it would be to use a third party app and not see a single ad. So yeah, I’ll give it a try if you release an Android version. Any plans?

overdevs@lemmy.world on 18 Jun 2024 17:15 next collapse

Some people have asked about an Android app so maybe I will try to ship it by the end of this month. Thing is, I see thousands of users using the website but feedback/contributions etc are so small I don’t even know what people want. I mean I am not expecting 5 star reviews/donations from every user using it but people don’t even give good/bad feedback. I also don’t want to force tracking because that’s what I myself despise. So there is not way to know what people want unless they use the feedback form and tell me.

Riven@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 18 Jun 2024 19:33 next collapse

Would it be possible for you to have a Lil pop up letting the people who use the app know? Something like, ‘Hey, if there’s anything you like or don’t like about the app PLEASE let me know I’m listening and want to make it better.’ maybe have it be at the top of any new download patchnotes.

Jtotheb@lemmy.world on 19 Jun 2024 02:17 collapse

In the spirit of offering feedback I disagree, pop-ups are terrible design, super abrasive and make the experience worse no matter when they show up

Matty_r@programming.dev on 19 Jun 2024 08:34 next collapse

I don’t mind the way FairEmail does it. There is a pop up the first time its launched after an update, which shows the release notes.

Something like that, one time only, with a link to the Feedback button inside the settings within the app or something would be a good balance.

Riven@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 19 Jun 2024 15:33 collapse

I usually dislike them as well which is why I suggested it for patch notes. Those might be the only popups I don’t mind cause it let’s me know of all the new cool stuff that the app has.

Devdogg@lemmy.ml on 18 Jun 2024 17:32 next collapse

I want an android version of this. I will use the feedback form and tell you all about the good and the bad. I’m only one guy though…

overdevs@lemmy.world on 18 Jun 2024 20:57 collapse

In a week.

Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works on 18 Jun 2024 21:18 next collapse

That just takes time. You will start to notice some feedback trickle in and advise you to wait on a lot of it until you see trends so you aren’t appealing to vocal minority with changes. Also, I’ve found putting together a core testing group of people whose opinions you trust is very helpful. Give them early access to new versions and demonstrate an interest in their feedback and they can help with bug finding and feature requests.

01189998819991197253@infosec.pub on 19 Jun 2024 01:59 next collapse

If the app offers a feedback option through the app itself, I usually use it. But if I have to go into a git for feedback, I usually don’t. Nothing against git, I just don’t ever remember when I’m in front of the computer. [I, too, would enjoy an android app. On fdroid, if at all possible, but playstore is fine, too, if you don’t want to foss your project.]

I am the mouthy broad you love to hate. Make an Android version and I’ll tell you everything I can, using proper vernacular. I’m a frontend developer so I might actually offer helpful feedback.

Unfortunately a lot of good homelab, Networking, security and other niche knowledge is still on reddit.

Technically one could just archive the relevant subs from reddit using an automated crawler and never have to visit the actual website again, both not everybody is self-hosting to that extent. This is for people who haven’t self-hosted yet

You don’t need an app for that, just replace ‘www’ with ‘old’ in the URL.

there is an nsfw toggle in the app.

alanceil@lemmy.world on 19 Jun 2024 09:48 next collapse

Thanks, subscribing without an account is exactly what I needed for some small communities not on Lemmy. If you could add a feature to hide specific user’s comments (Automoderator), that’d be awesome.

Why does using a VPN break it?

overdevs@lemmy.world on 19 Jun 2024 16:45 next collapse

Reddit is aggressively blocking VPNs.

PM_Your_Nudes_Please@lemmy.world on 19 Jun 2024 22:02 collapse

That’s a Reddit issue; Reddit has been blocking anyone who is on a VPN but not logged in. Because they want to aggressively track your telemetry data, but a VPN makes that more difficult. So they force VPN users to sign in, so they can still track those users.

HaleHirsute@infosec.pub on 20 Jun 2024 12:40 collapse

OK good to know thank you. I’m located in China, so they block it locally, so I can’t view it from either side, then. (I’m sure there is a way around it somehow)

PM_Your_Nudes_Please@lemmy.world on 20 Jun 2024 18:34 collapse

Reddit’s way around it is simple: Log in. Because if you’re logged in, they can associate all of your traffic with that account, thus making any VPN privacy protections essentially null. But lurking viewers (like the one in this post) will have a more difficult time with that, because it requires actually signing in.

yournamehere@lemm.ee on 19 Jun 2024 15:36 next collapse

can you remove it so reddit can eff off?

thrawn@lemmy.world on 19 Jun 2024 15:40 next collapse

Hi op, thanks for making this. My opinions of Reddit aside, this is a neat app.

Is it possible to open a link from Reddit in this app, maybe with a Safari extension? The mobile site is dogshit and, because old reddit threads often provide the most useful solutions, I sometimes find myself struggling against that unusable site.

I’d also suggest having collapsible sub groups separate from subscriptions, like Alien Blue did, since you have an AB reference in the colors. Back then, I liked having that so I could have groups for news, hobbies, etc. But without having to see the whole list. Seeing AB there reminded me of a lot of great features that app had.

overdevs@lemmy.world on 19 Jun 2024 16:45 collapse

Oh you noticed the Alien Blue reference, there is an Antenna reference too :) Thing is apple doesn’t allow everyone to open apps from safari matching a url like Android, you have to manually verify the app on your domain. I will provide a bookmarklet that you can tap and open the url in rdx. I can do the multireddit thing, maybe in next update.

thrawn@lemmy.world on 20 Jun 2024 04:45 collapse

That would be phenomenal, thank you

etchinghillside@reddthat.com on 20 Jun 2024 12:48 next collapse

I swear I’m only partially an idiot – but how do you “go back” after drilling down into a post on iOS?

overdevs@lemmy.world on 20 Jun 2024 16:58 collapse

Just swipe back from the left edge? swiping from right will take you to the post page again. Just like a browser.

etchinghillside@reddthat.com on 20 Jun 2024 17:02 collapse

Oddly doesn’t seem to do anything - just the up/down swipe inputs are registering as scrolling.

overdevs@lemmy.world on 20 Jun 2024 18:14 collapse

This shouldn’t happen, I have tested the app on multiple devices. Try this go to the settings tab, click on donate page or appearance page then try swiping left to right from the left most edge. If even that doesn’t work please tell me about the device you are using.

etchinghillside@reddthat.com on 20 Jun 2024 19:21 collapse

Appreciated. It’s working – I guess I’m not used to swiping from the extreme edge of the screen.

WhiteHairSuperSaiyan@lemmynsfw.com on 26 Jun 2024 03:38 collapse

I’m not sure why but i am getting no audio from any video. (Granted they are probably mostly from redgifs)

overdevs@lemmy.world on 26 Jun 2024 11:45 collapse

So the problem with Redgifs is a messy one. There are two ways to embed their videos, one is through their embed code which includes lots of redgifs branding, is tiktok like and not so natie (but it helps them track you etc). The other is a mp4 file that just works like any other video except they don’t have audio. Since almost all of the gifs on Redgifs are nsfw I chose the kater method to display their vids. You can always click the little safari icon (or the globe icon on android) and view the redgif with audio.

WhiteHairSuperSaiyan@lemmynsfw.com on 26 Jun 2024 13:32 collapse

Ah that makes sense. Thank you for going the privacy direction.
