Oops, accidentally deleted my DNA instead and now I’m melting.

I have an extra chromosome. Do you want it?

steal_your_face@lemmy.ml on 27 Mar 02:30 collapse

I’m down

69420@lemmy.world on 27 Mar 03:08 collapse

I see what you did there.

I’ll be sure to tell the family members I don’t talk to anymore about this…ug.

dan@upvote.au on 26 Mar 20:21 next collapse

I requested a download and am waiting for that to be available before deleting it from 23AndMe.

rowdyrockets@lemm.ee on 27 Mar 00:21 next collapse

Same. That was 2 days ago and nothing yet. I’m skeptical they even have staff to complete these requests. Not sure how long I’m gonna wait before just pulling the trigger. I’m planning to scramble as much data as possible and change my address to somewhere in California but doubtful that will do much.

olympicyes@lemmy.world on 27 Mar 00:28 collapse

Just delete it. You’re losing momentum.

It asks for your birthday to delete/access your data, but I used a fake one when I signed up…

alphapuggle@programming.dev on 26 Mar 22:33 next collapse

Giving them your genetic data was fine, but your birthday was too much?

doylio@lemmy.ca on 27 Mar 00:59 collapse

I tried to hide my identity as much as possible when I made the account. This included using a pseudo-random email address, fake name, fake address, and (unfortunately) fake birthday, as all of those things could be used as foreign keys to try to match my identity

Rozz@lemmy.sdf.org on 27 Mar 02:10 next collapse

You have to keep track of your fake identity next time

RightEdofer@lemmy.ca on 27 Mar 11:29 collapse

The real DNA negates a lot of that unfortunately. If any family member also used the service they can use that to triangulate your identity.

olympicyes@lemmy.world on 27 Mar 00:27 next collapse

Try 1/1/1969.

douglasg14b@lemmy.world on 27 Mar 02:03 collapse

Let this be a lesson to write down any fake data you enter into accounts.

My keepass entries maintain all the fake form into for each account, makes it possible to move forward in instances just like this.

reddig33@lemmy.world on 26 Mar 22:09 next collapse

Good luck with that. I filled out the paperwork last year to have mine deleted and never got confirmation. Now that they’re bankrupt, I doubt there’s anyone on staff who could handle it.

umbrella@lemmy.ml on 26 Mar 23:31 next collapse

yeah, right.

The only way to win is to not play…

They’ve been in the news daily with issues, Financial and otherwise. The sudden rush of people now just slows it all down.

I am glad I signed up yeas ago though, it was a hopeful time when I assumed technology would help fix us, and give us answers, and help me know things no humans before us could know.

Half the crap I downloaded from them is meaningless. Family tree is proprietary, and everything else is in formats I don’t know what to do with. Not like I’ll upload it again but it’s just files I have with no purpose now.

Akasazh@feddit.nl on 27 Mar 11:19 collapse

In the best case they’ll just flag it as deleted, yet keep the data
