Swarms of AI “killer robots” are the future of war: If that sounds scary, it should::Commentary: Are we sure AI-guided weapons systems will obey human commands?

I love the composition of all the prop blades lining up centrally.

We still do it manually in France, we like being in contact with people…

moistclump@lemmy.world on 26 Feb 2024 06:47 collapse

And I, for one, think that’s beautiful.

rikudou@lemmings.world on 25 Feb 2024 10:19 collapse

Not sure how it’s in India, but in mine the farmers blocked the roads to our capital and burned tires. That’s not what I call peaceful.

obinice@lemmy.world on 25 Feb 2024 10:37 collapse

Sounds peaceful to me, unless they’re rioting, looting, attacking/murdering people? Have they even shot at anyone yet or taken hostages?

If they have to block a few roads and burn a few bits of rubber to get the attention of their (supposed, I can’t comment) oppressors, that seems quite peaceful.

I know to us it seems a little extreme yes, but on the scale of what’s peaceful and what isn’t, I’d say a bit of minor inconvenience in road travel and some burning tyres is pretty peaceful <3

I want to write their next article: “If bad things happen, that will be bad. How this will affect you and why you should worry.”

Pringles@lemm.ee on 26 Feb 2024 13:30 collapse

It’s salon, the bar to write for them is almost on the floor. Just make it absurdly obviously left wing. Facts aren’t required.

MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works on 25 Feb 2024 10:38 next collapse

Wouldn’t this mean that eventually warfare would just be drone on drone combat then? I’d prefer that over lives lost. But it does mean absolute mayhem before everyone is on a level playing field though.

coffeebiscuit@lemmy.world on 25 Feb 2024 10:52 next collapse

It would mean drones on civilians.

dhhyfddehhfyy4673@fedia.io on 25 Feb 2024 11:43 collapse

As is tradition.

DarkThoughts@fedia.io on 25 Feb 2024 12:14 next collapse

Only for rich nations.

MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works on 26 Feb 2024 01:07 collapse

Hence my last sentence

DarkThoughts@fedia.io on 27 Feb 2024 13:15 collapse

Your last sentence implies that everyone can be on a level playing field, which is just not the truth though. Think about rebel groups. They might use the odd drones here and there, especially with another state benefactor, but they'll inherently have to use human resources over robotic ones due to the lack of infrastructure, funding and potentially even knowledge required to produce those things.
This might sound okay at first glance when we think of true terrorists like the IS and others. But what happens when the state actors become the villain and the terrorists actual freedom fighters? Especially given our current climate of rising authoritarianism within the west. Then combine AI killer swarms with AI mass surveillance and it is pretty much impossible to root out said evil again.

MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works on 27 Feb 2024 21:25 collapse

If you want to get dark eventually only the evil will survive and the various evils (if multiple) will then duke it out via drone on drone

GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world on 25 Feb 2024 13:10 next collapse

Richard Gatling had the same thought.

pr06lefs@lemmy.ml on 26 Feb 2024 13:17 collapse

Yes, just drone on drone warfare once humanity has been fully eradicated.

I_Has_A_Hat@lemmy.world on 25 Feb 2024 13:36 next collapse

Everyone’s thinking of drones dropping bombs, but they aren’t thinking of the true horror; kamikaze micro drones. It doesn’t take much to kill someone, and micro drones can be wicked fast. Imagine a swarm of drones the size of a finch or smaller, each carrying a tiny explosive. Imagine these drones flying next to people’s heads and detonating themselves. You could clear out a whole building with very little structural damage.

Kraven_the_Hunter@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 25 Feb 2024 15:04 next collapse

You’re thinking of kamikaze finches and I’m thinking of Terminators.

Plopp@lemmy.world on 25 Feb 2024 15:39 next collapse

Sure, but what kind of range do you get with tiny drones? Although they could probably be delivered to the vicinity by some other vessel. Like cluster warheads but with a large swarm of exploding autonomous drones.

I_Has_A_Hat@lemmy.world on 25 Feb 2024 16:47 next collapse

Quite a bit more than you would think. Remember, besides the potential for a drone carrier, these drones wouldn’t need power for the flight back.

cynar@lemmy.world on 26 Feb 2024 17:22 collapse

A non-rechargable battery can also have significantly more capacity. A suicide drone likely doesn’t need to be recharged.

I’ve already watched dozens of Russians die like this.

KeenFlame@feddit.nu on 26 Feb 2024 17:47 next collapse

Hoping it will be treated like biological chemical warfare. It may be good at killing, but that’s not necessarily the best way of conducting warfare

brickfrog@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 25 Feb 2024 17:12 next collapse

It’s okay, killbots have a preset kill limit. Just send wave after wave of human soldiers at them until they shut down.

Glitter will be a self defence weapon.

phoneymouse@lemmy.world on 25 Feb 2024 18:07 collapse

It’s already here. I realized that the moment I saw a Ukrainian suicide drone chasing two Russians on a motorcycle who were trying to out run it. They didn’t make it, but it definitely felt like something out of a dystopian Hollywood movie.

Liz@midwest.social on 26 Feb 2024 13:59 collapse

I’m of the understanding that those drones have pilots.

KeenFlame@feddit.nu on 26 Feb 2024 17:45 collapse

Yeah no unmanned vehicles fly that well. And it’s extremely illegal but idk if that really stops anyone. It did work for some types of ammunition though, and biological warfare? So maybe?
